Q: what are modern death rituals in china?
i want to know what chinese families do when a loved one dies? do sick loved ones die at home or in hospital? who does post mortem care? are funerals private events or public events?
Well, no answers thus far so I'll chime in with what I know.
One dies where one dies (in the hospital if they've been sick, at home if it's old age, on the street if they're poor).
Autopsies are not common unless there're suspicious circumstances (outside of suspicious circumstances while in police custody).
Cremation is almost always the norm and done post-haste.
Funerals can be private (at the crematorium) or public (it is said that family will pay strangers to attend funerals, as with weddings, just to give "face" to the family and departed - wedding or funeral).
Not too many funeral homes, funeral directors or hearses to be found.
I think the biggest cultural difference is when a family member dies but young family members are not told until after examination time in order not to ruin their persormance on the exams.
