Q: What are the road rules at pedestrian crossings?

I know the practicalities are that you have to look after yourself and that vehicles will just force their way through but Common sense would also tell me that there must be some actual road rules here around pedestrian crossings. I am interested to find out if the chaos at crossings is due to lack of a clear rule or lack of compliance and enforcement.

1) What is the rule at marked ( zebra) crossings without traffic lights?

2) What is the rule for cars that are turning left or right at T intersections with traffic lights and as a result need to cross a marked crossing on which the green walking light is showing?

I think they can turn right on a red light as long as they stop (but never do stop)

like in the USA

as for crossings in Shanghai I noticed they stopped to let me cross most times

and they were trying to enforce it in one City

as for every where else I would say you need to be swift and agile or

be willing to become a hood ornament .

I can tell you what the rules should be, but have you ever seen in China anyone following the concepts of "right of way" and "yield the right of way" ?.

To me there are enough traffic laws, they are just not enforced at all.  So, the rule of the biggest and loudest will prevail is the one working.

At any pedestrian crossing, even with the green light for the pedestrian to cross, all bikes will continue moving, taxis mostly also will, and public buses also will ignore the red light (to them) at will.  What I do is look BOTH ways (even in one way streets, and swiftly cross the street when there is an empty space for me to do safely.

Actually, they have plenty of rules for traffic in China, except no one cares to obey them or else no one would ever get where they wish to go. As for 'zebra striped crossings'... here is a funny one [as was explained to me by a police]:  It is a 'safe crossing' for pedestrians HOWEVER, it is illegal for cars to stop there!

Go figure!

Here is todays mission outlined.

Try crossing the road when your partner is holding an umbrella and you are trying to see over it or behind it to see if there is an oncoming truck (that you know there will be)

What is wrong darling she asks

I want to see who is going to run over me I reply

But I can see she says

just get the F@$king thing out of my way will you.

And this is why we drinksurprise

woody:

I can relate to that. I lift it up so I can fkn see. She pulls it down because she says she is getting wet. She says she can see fine and on it goes. I would rather walk in the rain than not see what is going on.

Not really MissA. My date the other day complained that the sun was "making her black". Mind you, we are talking like about 8 seconds of direct sunlight so I can see the bus barreling down on us in the middle of the street....

I would say there are no rules. However, crossing at a pedestrian crossing means that there might be more people, and if you cross together, you are less likely to get hit.

No

it means the drivers have a better chance of increasing there Quota for the daysurprise

Hard material beats soft material. Exept there is so much soft material around you might get stuck.
