I've been given many presents from Chinese friends for no real reason. However, I'm not sure if they expect a present back.
among boy and girlfrens , umbrella.lighters and shoes are taboo. if not girl/boy fren one should avoid flowers,,
green hats are taboo too ,
We give gifts on special occasions, like birthday, Spring Festival, etc to each other.
The gifts you present should be carefully selected according to the preference of the receiver.
Purse, belt are presented between lovers. Common gifts include accessories for girls, books, chocolate, handcrafts, flowers and fruits for patients, toys for children...
The gifts should not be too exensive or cheap.
Clocks are taboo
The clock and hat are things i got warned about before coming to china ...
the clock (even hello kitty) .. states you wish them to pass away soon .. although hello kitty should maybe join a exception? seriously .. its like a lol catz
as for the green hat it is ideal if you heard or know about someones partner being unfaithful to them! it really takes the pressure off then going on the subject ...
" ugh ya .. i have slept with your b/f .. sorry XD"
or you can say " here i found ya a sweet hat! "
No one will expect any return from you I think, as u said they gave u the gifts for no reason. I think they just like you, this is what we do.
If u get the gifts for a reason, like birthday, wedding, New year……, u supposed to give gifts back to them for the same occasion.
I was given a green scarf by a Chinese friend. Does that also mean my boyfriend's been unfaithful or is it stricly just a green hat that counts?
P.s. I think it's always nice to reciprocate even if they don't expect it. Receiving a gift from someone is a joyful thing and will cheer up just about anyone on a rainy day (or smoggy day as the case is in Beijing)
