Q: What are some common foreign role models Chinese have?

I always find it very interesting when Chinese talk about how great XYZ is in whatever country. A lot of the time they're so confident and enthusiastic you'd think that person was almost Chinese. I often end up getting arguments with them. Now I just nod and say smile.

I asked a good Chinese friend, and he said, "What is a role-model?" I explained the concept, and he said, "Oh, my mother and father." I told him, "no, a foreign role-model," and he said, "Your mother and father!"

I gave up.

Deng Wenge (邓文革), the wife of Rupert Murdoch.  You mention her name to any Chinese woman and they are likely to instantly obtain a look of both awe and envy.

Bill Gates is a popular one. I asked a class who their role models was once and one girl said "Pele, the Brazilian Flasher." I took a gamble and corrected her that he was probably known as the Brazilian Flash, a flasher being more commonly known as a man who exposes himself to women on subways. Another young boy of only 11 told the class that his role model was Adolf Hitler. I am a responsible teacher though and knew that i'd be doing my students a disservice if I allowed such a statement to pass without question or judgement, so I punched him squarely in the face.

do chinese people know about CHUCK NORRIS

willandjoy:

I have practiced the same (Korean) style martial art as action star Chuck Norris for many, many years before coming to China, plus keen on his iconic movies and such;  yet, when talking to Chinese (particularly students) they confuse the name Chuck Norris with Chen Long (the Chinese pseudonym for Jacky Chan).

Pretty much anyone who has excelled in sport (Pele), pop music (Michael Jackson), or business (Steve Jobs).

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
