Q: What are some pt job opportunities?

My teaching contract ends on Jan. 15th. My next semester doesn't start till the beginning of March. Right now I have a job teaching conversational English in the evenings a couple days a week, and I hope to get a few more hours from that when I am off work, but I think I'm going to go crazy during this time! Basically I have a month and a half with almost nothing to do. I have heard of online English teaching, does anyone know anything about this? I want to procure personal contacts to teach English too, as this is much more lucrative financially. Have you done this, what are some good ways to find people that want to be taught English? Any other ideas for ways to keep busy in this month and a half?

I got ripped off when I first came here and was living on 2k a month. Life was terrible. Now I am making significantly more then that, life is pretty good!

Don't be an intern! Get a real job!

If your Contract expire on Jan 15th, your Residence permit expire on the same day.

You'll get 30-days RP extension, and at the end of extension (Feb 14th) you must exit China.

I guess, your wording sucks. It might be semester ends on Jan 15th, not your Contract.

Canadaboy22:

Okay, my wording could improve, but if you actually read my post you would of also read that my next semester starts in March, which means my residence permit is being extended. All of this is quite immaterial though, as my question was about pt job opportunities, not residence permits.

As you wrote, you're required to exit China on Feb 14h. I can't give you an advice how to get part-time job, if I know you must exit, can I? You should add 'my RP is being extended...', so your legal matter would be clear. Also, your Contract doesn't end, if it's being extended.

I just got big (loads of hours) part-time, however I can't advertise it till I won't be able to take all offered hours.

Your best choice is 'Jobs' tag, top R of this page, change parameters to 'your city' and 'part-time' vacancies. I looked for part-time a week ago, and most of the offers for PT in winter break are short, some 2 weeks work with 5k pay and housing.

Other thing you can do is to post your advert/contact numbers on Campus Board, or just walk&knock the doors of Training centers nearby.

I don't do online teaching, or any other form of part-time then I described.

Canadaboy - we legally hired teachers (qualified, experienced, etc) are somewhat touchy about ppl coming over here and working illegally - it drives our pay rates down.

And so, your particular wording happens to slot in precisely with that 'touchiness;..!

So, please forgive Icnif - it was a vaild point he made!

@Shining: 'surpriseshenme'

I don't really agree, anybody can drive the wage down, because of the huge demand for FTs in China. My city Uni wants FT with decent pay, but they can't fill the position. Adverts are on several times a day.

Some they think that's really happening, but Chinese are staunchy negotiators, and will negotiate anything......in other words Native English teacher can be forced by employer to work for lower wage than other Natives in the same city.

Okay, thank you both for the clarification. I didn't realize how important my wording in this particular matter was. I appreciate the ideas though, it is certainly helpful.

CB - I'm going to ask a few questions that may seem somewhat personal (I don't know why - humans are so touchy about little bits of paper!)

What are your qualifications?

What's your experience?

Are you from Canada?

What's' your current salary? (I'm presuming it's below 4000 - unless you're in a big city like SH, BJ, GZ etc...).

Which city are you in? (this last is a HUGE factor!!!)

All of the above affect the answers you may get!

And other questions you may be asked - such as - why the hell are you employed as an intern', and getting such a shit salary teaching English???

During the Sping Festival period, most English learners will leave the big cities and head back home to be with their family. Some may stay, and some may only go for a short period of time (ie, the week of SF).

Fortunately, you are asking early... so - as Icnif suggested, put up some notices at the local university English Language department (if you're white - sorry - no offence, and I don't like it, but TIC!!) put up a photo as well)

Also - kindergartens! SOOOO... many parents want their precious snowflakes to learn English - and they usually will pay higher than the average Zhou. You could also stand outside a couple of them and hand out fliers (however, note the racism I casually mentioned above!)

Some older kids will be interested as well (well, their parents will be).

However - depending on how you answered those above questions - find a new job!!!

Qualifications - TESOL certificate (I think thats a qualification)
Experience - The last two and a half months I have been teaching primary school here, thats the only experience I have.
Yes I am from Canada.
It’s 2000 rmb/month. And with the contract extension I have signed, it will go up to 4000 rmb next semester, with 4500 rmb and 3000 rmb bonuses at the end of each semester, respectively.
I am in living in Chengdu.

When you say stand outside and hand out fliers, you mean stand outside a university? And, what kind of fees would be reasonable for me to charge for private English lessons?

icnif77:

TESOL Cert. might be the best English teaching cert., but it doesn't qualify as 'diploma', what you need, if you want to work legally in China (Z visa/RP).

I guess, your status differs then ours, because you're student.

Wage you're receiving is low. Beginner's  salary for FT in China with proper docs. should be .....I don't know. Mine was 5500 Rmb/m for 16 classes/week and F visa (2009).

Chengdu is tricky town, where it's usual to get teaching offers with regular pay and doubled required hours (7-8k/m for 28h/w), in other words 'offers with low pay'.

Once you state your salary, it's important to write 'how many hours/classes you're required to perform'.

Can't advice on the pay for private class. You can look at Jobs, but most offers there have 'middle man', who get cut of the money Chinese student is willing to pay. You should ask a bit more than they offer there for part-time/pay per hour, if you're approached by student/payee directly.

Shining_brow:

Holy crap!!!

2K!!!

You are SO getting ripped off!!!

Do you have a bachelor's degree? If so, what field?

4K is seriously still bottom end - ESPECIALLY in Chengdu! The only ones on that low a salary (other than the others getting ripped off) are those in universities - who  only work 10-15 hours per week, and do something else on the side! (privates, business, or study)

At the very least, go to the principal of your school, and ask them how much they're paying the agent. (cos, obviously, you're working for an agent - schools don't have foreign "interns"!) You can bet your arse you're going to be shocked at just how much the agent is taking out of your pay!!!

icnif77:

At full time job, agents get one whole salary offered to FT, except at Helen, where they were really manipulating/robbing FTs and schools.

No point of asking that. I don't consider it as 'my business', so I'd pass. However, OP should look at how much Canadian FTs (Native English Teachers) get for full-time work and compare with his own pay.

Best option considering 'student' status would be teaching private students or working in Kindies nearby, both set as pay per hour by collecting pay every week.

Okay, so to be clear, I DON'T have a bachlors degree. Or any kind of degree. I finished high school, and thats it. I came here on a provincial education internship program, with absolutely no idea what I was doing, or how to be a teacher, (besides the tesol training, which is pretty much bullshit for someone who's never taught before). Basically I teach 10 hours a week, I don't have to deal with any homework or tests, there are no requirements for my classes whatsoever. I get my visa's taken care of, I get free accomodation, and I get free meals during the week.

For someone with no qualifications or experience or teaching knowledge of any kind, this deal to get me here was actually pretty sweet. I have agreed to stay for a second semester, but I haven't signed a contract yet. If I was confident I was able to get another job in time that I wouldn't be kicked out of the country for not having a visa, I would like to get a better paying job, but for someone with my level of experience and qualifications, I don't know if I can. All the postings I see are looking for teachers with years of experience, and ALL of them require a bachlors degree, neither of which I have.

Spiderboenz:

Hate to be the one to say it, but you cannot find a legal job without an actual degree.

Go home and get a degree, you are being taken advantage of on a MASSIVE level.

Well thats good to know. You could say I am being taken advantage of, but on the other hand, I left Canada with no degree, no experience, no money, and no prospects. I have always wanted to travel, and being able to integrate into a culture is an amazing experience. I may be making shit pay, compared to real English teachers, but the fact of the matter is, I'm not a real teacher. I've worked in construction and done delivery jobs mostly before I came here. Say what you want, but with the level of experience I have, and the ridiclously low standards I am placed under, and extremely light workload that I have, it's actually a pretty good deal for me. It just gets boring sometimes, which is why I want more work.

Still, they should be paying you 100RMB/hour at least. If you work 10 hours a week and you get 2000 a month then that means they pay you 50 an hour only which is really, really shit... Don't you talk to other expats about their salaries?
