Q: What are the "Top 100 Universities" and "Top 500 Companies" for the purpose of a Z-Visa?

Some sites mention that China uses a point-based system to determine how desirable you are as a foreign employee for China. There are bonus points for a degree from "Top 100 University" and for work experience (how much?) at a "Top 500 Company".

What rankings are used for that?

I'd say, your best bet is to dial SAFEA and ask there what metrics they use.

As of yet, the details of the new policy are extremely vague. What is classified as a ‘well-known’ overseas university has not been specified. However, if the unified work permit policy is anything to go by, this may well mean the top 100 universities in the world. If the number of applicable foreign universities is limited, this may be seen as a move to promote Chinese universities to foreign students, as the policy applies to all foreign master’s graduates from Chinese universities. The announcement of this new policy was quickly followed by reports that Chinese officials hope to establish 16 ‘world-class universities’ by 2030 by attracting increased investment and high-level overseas talent. Giving graduates easier access to the Chinese job market following their studies may be one of the government’s methods of attraction to achieve this goal.

Following the introduction of the points-based unified work permit, which many saw as a toughening of the stance of the Chinese government towards foreign workers, this policy appears to open the door to more of the world’s academic talents. Having said that, several major details are still missing from this policy. It is expected that further details will be released along with the quota sizes on January 31, although this may be delayed due to the Chinese New Year holiday.

Implemented by the Shanghai Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, the following changes will be implemented from July 1, 2017:

-The possibility for college graduates to obtain a working visa waiving the 2 years working experience has been extended to all applicant with a Master’s degree or higher obtained from a Chinese university with an average academic score of 80/100 and above and employed by a company registered in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone or Zhang Jiang High Technology Park. Such a possibility was before restricted to applicants graduated from a university in Shanghai.

-This possibility to obtain a working visa waiving the 2 years working experience Bachelor’s degree university in Shanghai and employed by a company registered in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone or Zhang Jiang High Technology Park. Such a possibility was before restricted to applicants graduated with a Master’s degree or higher from a university in Shanghai.

There is 'points calculator' on the last weblink with 'points metric' evaluation.

Top 100 universities? Check here:

Top 500 companies? I think this is the Fortune 500 list but not 109% sure. I know from ScotsAlan that the online application has them listed in a drop down menu.

ScotsAlan:

Indeed. They are listed on a drop down menu on the online application site. I dont know what fortune 500 list they use. In my case, I worked for a top 100 company 20 years ago. But score was zero points because that company has since amalganated and the name no longer exists. The WP list is only current f500 companies. The good news is that Walmart and Amazon are both in the top 5. Exxon is there too. So full points if you were bag packer in Walmart, an order picker in Amazon, or a gas attentant at an Exxon gas station. I assume that anyway, cos I never got past the company menu to see if they ask what your job title is :-)

ScotsAlan:

Be aware. The menu is in Chinese, so it is very totaly extreamly fecking dead cert likley that the person inputting, will have no idea how to connnect the name in English, Spanish, French into Chinese. You might have been a head chemist at Glaxo SmithKline, but it is very unlikely that translates well. It is even more unlikely the average HR inputter has ever heard of it.

What online form you are referring to? Can I submit a Z-Visa application online now?

That Fortune 500 thing is an interesting approach. Number one is Walmart. If you once filled the shelves there, you have better chances on a Chinese work visa now crying -

Unfortunately, there are more rankings out there and the rankings change every year, too. My former uni made the top 100 at this ranking a couple of years ago and is beyond 100 now. Or do I have to go back to my year of graduation?

Anyway, I also guess now this is just an incentive for foreign graduates of certain Chinese universities and does not really matter if you have a degree from abroad.

Hello,

I would invite you to check the recent update about China Work Visa : https://nhglobalpartners.com/china-work-visa-points-system-work-permit/

This will give you some ideas of how the system is changing and how difficult it is now to get a work visa in china.

Classification of Work Permits
Since April 2017, a new Chinese regulation have combined the old Alien Employment Permit and the old Foreign Expert Certificate into one and single work permit: the Foreigner’s Work Permit. The regulation also set up a classification of the work permits in 3 categories: A – B – C, depending on the qualification and the skills of each foreigners working in China:

A = high-level experts
B = professional workers
C = low skilled workers
Since this classification has been set up, Class A and Class B of foreign profiles generally allow them to obtain a Work Permit. Class C refers to very specific low-skilled profiles.

To determine the classification of a Work Permit, there are two methods: be directly qualified or reach enough points on the work permit points table.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
