Q: What are the top English language schools in Chengdu?

Hello, everyone. I'm trying to put together a list of private English schools and universities hiring English teachers in Chengdu. I'm basically looking for the 3-5 "main" schools in each category that any local teacher will have heard of.

So far, I have NDI and Web English as far as private schools go. Are there any others? Is English First there?

Same goes for the universities. What are the 3-5 main universities hiring foreign teachers there?

I have a year teaching experience in China (I was in Wuhan) and a CELTA, if helpful.

Thanks for any advice!

I'd suggest you find the Chengdu expat forum and look on there.

When I was working for NDI in Cheng Du in 2007 there was an English First there, pretty much straight across the road...Is it not there now?

Avoid EF,Meten, and New Oriental like the plague. I know for a fact that EF and Meten will screw with your visas and change their promises to you the instant you show up in China. Also, run from Hampton...especially if crazy Ivy is still running things.

There are is one called easy peasy English run by a great guy. It pays less than average and won't sponsor a visa, but he is straight (which is rare when you do business in China).

I2 can be a good school, depending on who your center manager is.

To be honest, it is best to get a uni gig, and not let any one Chinese employer hold all of your cards. Tianfu southwest is an ok school, Chengdu university is ok, Sichuan U looks good on the resume, but the admin is bad even for Chinese standards.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
