Q: What Are The Worst Things For You About Bars & Clubs In Beijing?
Hey,
I like to go out, share drinks with fellas, meet new people, listen to good music in a bar or club and have fun. But In Beijing there are 3 things which often turn my party mood down:
- The same kind of music every time: In some places you can even tell what is the next song coming.
- The FAKE Alcohol: Bad hangover in the next day, headache and stomach problems, Bad for the Liver too.
- the Dirt, even in toilets sometimes...
I know there are more stuff which are not appropriate to have a good time in a lot of bars, clubs & pubs in Beijing, which ones you don't like and consider as really bad???

I like to sit in a bar sometimes and just have a quiet drink. I am facing the bar, hunched over my drink, back to the public. Back home, this means "stay away". However in China:
1- Every 2 minutes I get approached by a girl or a man asking me if I want a "masagee" or if I want "pretty girl".
2- Get approached by intoxicated middle aged men who want to take a picture of me with them.
3- Overpriced beer.
4- Overpriced cocktails which do not taste very good.
5- Random people (Chinese) who are hell bent in asking me questions (do you like China, do you like Chinese food, do you like tea....).
6- Random people (Western) who are hell bent in telling me how fantastic/horrible China is.
7- Even the bartender, seeing I am alone, will ask me if I "want pretty girl" and no matter how many times I say No, he will bring one after another after another.
The only place where I was able to find the kind of bar I liked was actually in Guilin. The "German Bar" in Walking street, while expensive, did give real cocktails, and the bartender kept out the "masagee people". He also was good at reading his customers body language and did a bang up job keeping "chatters" away from those who wanted a quiet drink.
Now, if you wanted company, either to chat or "other" all you needed to do was ask him and he would fix things up. And no, he was NOT a foreigner!
I miss that place, and I always made sure to leave him a nice tip!
Beijing however, that is the one thing I have had to do without these last two years....
add to that list:
- 'karaoke' performances i.e. someone squealing 'One Night In Beijing' out of tune with the volume cranked up to the max and blaring out on to the street in Houhai or Sanlitun,
- the idiots employed to clap their hands and 'entice' you into these awful bars,
- spotting Chinese people drinking chilled red wine or room temp white wine, or even adding cola to red wine(!!)
- lairy foreigners getting aggressive
- when the cost of a draught beer (扎啤) costs more here than it would back home
- same point as above but for cocktails. I'm buying a drink, not an image for christ sake.

You should add sleazy guys to that list too. Also, the VIP rooms in many of Beijing's clubs is your entrance to the dark and seedy Chinese underworld...think drugs, prostitution, gambling and you get the idea.

For me it's the distance. Those Beijing bars are a few thousand kilometers from Wuxi. It's too far and there are other, closer bars to complain about.
I've been to at least one club and several bars here. I would say the amount of smoke filling the room. I've been to clubs before not here and it was never like that. That's one thing I hate the most. Add that to I didn't really see a real dance floor and that's a bad combination.

Well, I'm cool with bars here as long as i get the opportunity chill out. Asian look works to my advantage in this sense, but there are still cases where sales continuous hint you that they can provide hot chicks that may go home with you. Once you show any interests in those chicks... GG...
