Q: What are your top five favourite places and top five least favourites here?

Must have been asked a thousand times, so I guess once more won't hurt. For me, starting with the least favourite, it would have to be:

1. Any train station. They're like football stadiums of jostling fans after a game where both sides lost. And they're a magnet for thieves. And the toilets in them are grim. And those waiting for trains have nothing better to do than gawp.

2. Any hospital. They're basically the same as the train stations, but it's a bit easier to have a cigarette in one.

3. Any long distance bus. The smell of feet; the paper shoes you have to wear acting as blotting paper for the gob; trying to make your six foot frame comfortable on a bed five feet long; the sound of mealtimes; the woman above you shouting on her mobile; the guy with the chicken sitting in the aisle next to you, and the ant-hill sized piles of seed-shells dotted at his feet.

4. Ningbo. The wife suggested we may have to move there in the future for her work. I suggested that I would rather set fire to my balls.

5. Guangzhou.

  And my favourite five:

1. Jiuzhaigou. Hands down, most beautiful place i've ever seen.

2. Huangshan. The Grand Canyon (not the most originally named place, but worthy of the name nontheless); frightening walkways; chizelled paths winding through stone cliffs; fat (sorry, I mean round...lardy....blobular) Americans trying to climb them. Excellent.

3. Yangshuo. Still my favourite place to go for a drink and a fight.

4. Longji. Hill upon hill as far as the eye can see of tiered rice paddies. Cool towns nestled amongst them. Great place for a hangover.

5. Right here at home.

Five favorites (starting with the most favorite):

1) My current city in Heilongjiang Province. It's a secret to avoid nutbaggery.

2) Xiangyang, Hubei Province. This was my favorite until now.

3) Xiamen, Fujian Province. Nice, clean city.

4) Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province

Five not favorites (starting with the least favorite):

1) Changsha, Hunan Province

2) Zhuzhou, Hunan Province

3) Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province

4) Pretty much any other city in Hunan Province

5) The Lake of Fire, which is probably in Hunan province...

Safe to say you're not a fan of Hunan province then.

Hey Hulk! You've joined us frosty folk in Heilongjiang. Have you done a full winter here yet and did you come from a cold place back home?

Hulk:

Not yet, but I came from the Northern part of the U.S. Plenty of harsh winters up there, though not usually as bad as Heilongjiang's.

Top 5 Faves (will try and do least five later)

1: Beijing on a non-polluted day. Despite the messiness of the city planning, a sunny afternoon in the Gulou area is something I will truly miss if I leave.

2: Liuzhou: Great fun and locals always up for some antics

3: Yangshuo: Apart from the ultra-tourism the surrounding area is a paradise

4: A BBQ stand on a summer's evening

5: A sweaty rock concert (though I guess that's anywhere)

mArtiAn:

Yeh, barbeque stands. Good one. I've met many a stranger and shared many a beer at many a barbeque stand many a time. A few months back I was sitting at one doing just that and a motorcycle came tearing down the road with a guy on the back holding a handbag. What caught my eye was that there was a woman still holding on to it dragging along behind. She just hung on till the whole lot of them disappeared out of sight. Then I went back to my beer.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
