Any thoughts?

It varies by Contract, but my last two jobs (Contracts) require show of plane ticket for refund. Contract does state fixed number of refund (6000 Rmb), and I'm not sure what if my ticket is more expensive than refund per Contract.
There's no average refund, just wording by the Contract.
'edit': '3. Teacher will receive return flight ticket to FT's home country at expiration of this Contract.'
That's wording in my present Contract. Contract doesn't state any number (limit) of refund. Rep. told me I must show/give them plane ticket before refund.
I got 9,000 RMB/ year, if I traveled or not for the last two years.
My first contract didn't stipulate a maximum amount.. but it was for economy only... they didn't like it when we started arguing at the end of the contract, and I told them I could buy a flight STARTING at 13,000RMB... and easily go much higher...
They changed that after, I believe
Mine is for 5000. What a laugh that amount is! It costs 5000 just to fly to Guangzhou and back!
When fronted about this abysmal sum they countered with 'this is the amount we've always paid'. Arseholes.
So I signed another contract....sigh...

You'll probably get it (5000) even if you don't fly.
I must spend first. If I don't move out of China, I don't get anything.

Last year they just handed over the cash. This year they wanted the see an original ticket, any ticket. Not necessarily one showing an exit from China.
My last couple of contracts have all been for an airfare reimbursement or compensation up to RMB 8,000. I have gotten this everywhere in Guangdong except in Guangzhou. The latter seems to be the general exception.
6,000 for airfare, 4,000 as travel allowance = 10,000.
I have 10,000 rmb for airfair.
Last year I had 15000 reimbursement.
