I received a job offer recently in small city to work as ESL teacher for kids and teens. The school usually pays 5000-6000 RMB for 25 classes per week with 2000 RMB visa compensation each one semester. I accepted the offer and worked for few weeks without signing a contract. Three days ago the school manipulated the numbers of the offer. Teachings hours have been increased from 25 to 30 with 4000 salary and 50 RMB for overtime teaching hour. Their pretext is that I don't have native-like pronunciation that's why the salary is dramatically decreased! . I am confused now about what is the least salary I should demand. I have a bachelor degree in English literature and two years of real teaching kids experience. My pronunciation doesn't sound native but it's clear and understood with little foreign accent. I have white look requirement (the thing which irritates me about Chinese schools).
What is the maximum teaching hours average?
How much should I ask for?

You can ask as much as you'll get! Simple!
Stay home, look for another job! I am not sure, what you'll do with your visa. Tell School, they can 'FOR SURE' find Native speaker, with correct (suitable) pronunciation.
or
Accept their low ball offer, and look for better job. Tell them, you don't have time for overtime work!
Don't judge yourself!
or compare your pronunciation with Chinese English teacher's pronunciation.
Your BA 'speaks' volumes. Chinese will low ball you, because they are bargaining for the money, they will spend for your work! Less than pay you, more profit School will make.
4000RMB for 30 contact hours? That offer is bullshit. Don't do it - run, don't walk.
In all honesty, nobody can give you a proper answer as to what you should ask unless you say what city you're living in. What's necessary and reasonable for Beijing is not the same in the third tier cities. Don't ever work more than 25 contact hours at one place.
May I also say, though, that your written English, at least, is excellent. If your spoken English is near as good, then with experience you are a valuable asset for a school. Good luck.
Once a deal of some kind is struck in paper, even though contracts tend to be useless here in China, do not let the school with whom you did the deal start to renegotiate the contract. At that point, if they do, then like everyone has said, go find something else.
RMB 4,000 for 25 - 30 hours per week is way out of line, more than way out of line. There are unis that will try to pay RMB 4,000 for 12 - 14 hours per week and they find plenty of takers, mainly because of the light load the ability to work outside hours and increase the earning potential.
In rereading your post, I noted that you accepted the offer and started working without a contract. That is absolutely something that you should not have done. No signed contract, even if they are meaningless, than no work.
There is no easy answer here but perhaps the best thing to do for you would be to go find another job.
Yeh man, run.
I'm the same as you, non-native, English major.
I get around 6000 for 14 classes a week...
manasyt:
Thanx man, they say i'm 'popular'...I rely a lot on humor so my class atmosphere is very relaxed . Treat my students as my friends and don't use stuff in the class that I find boring ..They say they feel happy in my class... and if they learn something along the way ....that's all that matters .
Im non-native too... 120-150 yuan/hour (150 one to one class). Full time in kindergarten was 10000
As everyone else has said that offer the school just made sounds very very low. Since you haven't signed a contract then I assume they are not supporting your visa, is that correct? If so I think I'd get out, you should find plenty of other teaching jobs even as a non native speaker. If they are supporting your visa then it becomes trickier.
