I'm guilty of not cleaning my place anymore now that I have an ayi.
Also, drinking and eating like a slobbering dirty pig
i lost my dining etiquette since i started to live in china
I used to spit on the street back home, before I even came to China, but I guess the frequency with which I do it has probably increased, and the guilty aftermath disappeared.
I drive like a twat at home now after years of observing China's (lack of ) road rules, and I cross multi-lane highways with gay abandon. 'Jaywalking' would be a better word.
I noticed that I ask way more personal questions about people when I first meet them. Not of the "How much do you earn?" "Are you married?" common garden Chinese variety, but probably overstep the Western politeness mark at least.
Oh, and I want to smoke everywhere. I don't but I always think 'It's not fair, I can do it anywhere in China, why not here?!'
NONE FOR NOW! Im still fresh off the plane Well almost ...
but its coming, I wont be able to resist the dark side to long!
Njord, blowing the nose without a tissue is probably the vilest thing I've seen people do in China. I'm not surprised you lost contact with your friend...
I wash my hands way less than before. I feel bad every time because it's the best way to get bad diseases... yet i keep not washing them...
Is it bad cause 3 billions of Chinese do it. Is it bad because YOU decide it's bad. Maybe its normal and YOU is different, not good not bad but diffrent?
putting chicken bones on the table is different.
having a baby take a dump on the supermarket floor is bad. i don't care were your from. unless spreading germs is now a good thing.
no one mentioned burping and farting in mixed company, when the guys get together maybe, but not when I'm eating , hate fecal contaminated air on my food
I've become a lot more aggressive since I'm here.
I drive a motorcycle, and whereas I was always quite calm when driving back home, I find myself going faster, yelling at people and cars and flipping them the bird. I've gotten arrested a couple of times, but, I shit you not, once the cops saw my bike and the fact I was a laowai they asked me, on both accounts, to take pictures with them on my bike and then let me drive off with a warning.
Queues - someone used to cut me in the queue, I would tell him nicely there was a queue, pointing around. Now someone passes me I just haul them by the shoulder and drag them back.
But yea, aggression is the bad habit I've picked up in this place. Just often feel like punching people in the face.
I've lost my social graces. I was home recently and noticed how much more polite people are to each other.
I no longer use bathrooms or toilets. I had the fabric market make me an adult size pair of those baby pants with the ass cut out so I can just do my business everywhere. It comes in very handy in those long lines at the bank.
I do get some weird looks when I bend over now, but it's definitely worth it. FREEDOM!
I swear at passing cars all the time.
When I see a crowd of people trying to rush in the subway when no one's gone out yet, I square my shoulders as far out as I can and just storm out, hurting as many people as I can.
Chewing with my mouth open, spitting in public though not in restaurants or anything, only outside. Staring openly without shame at others.
lets make a list:
i dont blow my nose without a tissue, cause now i am afraid i am gonna lick it. every kid eats its "monkeys" at least once, but this would be degenerate.
i dont spit the bones onto the table, cause i am afraid someone might lick the table. i put them on a napkin.
i don't take a piss in public anymore. any guy here that traveled by bus and tried to go to a public toilet at a bus station knows what i mean. backhome, if i had 10 guys taking a peak while i take a piss, would mean a bloodshed.
i happily fart , burp and scratch my "hotspots" in public ( well, not yet,but after three years it's the next step).
i text like a maniac, and even if i worked with IT for many years, i was never such a geek as now.
so, still not many bad habbits, but i am starting to enjoy them...
anyone near jinhua for a massive group burp?hehe
I hate myself for it, but now i smoke. If i pick up any more of their habits, I hope someone shoots me and end my misery.
I used to try to be friendly to my co-employees. Now I tell most of my co-employees never to talk to me because they definitely will make me angry.
Not talking to Chinese co-employees is the only way I can hold a job here.
I think of myself as a god amongst ants and I get angry over nothing. Also, I drink. A lot.
In all seriousness, China truly has made me impatient and short-tempered.
I would have to say my bad habits would be....
My sarcasm level has skyrocketed and I cross street where and whenever I please now.
But my worst would have to be, walking away from people if they aren't will to haggle prices. Got drunk and lost in a real bad part of Mexico (I'm talking meth house and people in utter shock that two white boys were walking around, alive) When we finally found a taxi to take us back to some place we wouldn't as likely be stabbed, but the taxi driver wouldn't budge at all on his price and I'd walk away. By the third one I turned down, my friend finally just made me agree to his price.
to spit on the street, walk with my t-shirt up until my chest when is hot, use slippers to go anywhere, curse to anyone who does anything wrong (in my language for security reasons), put the bones in the table when i eat. and to be rude in any interaction with strangers.
