Well it seems that tik tok is dead in America and Trump is going after Tencent for other ventures which could include we
chat. So if we chat gets banned, a vpn will be needed for my wife to communicate with mom in China. My top pick so far is proton mail vpn. I used the Swiss company email account in China to avoid observation.
Any Thoughts?

I use Skype since ever ... no VNP required in China or elsewhere ...
iMessage is another option ...
Express VNP best for WeChat according to this ...

Trump's WeChat Ban To Have Little Impact On Tencent; Tech War Confirmed
Tencent's current revenue exposure to the U.S. is less than 3%, with earnings exposure less than 5%."
I'll have to try that Proton. I tried maybe half a dozen off of torrent sites... all fake sh*t....
heard good things about Express, just chaps my a** to pay the fee. But I guess if a person really needs it, it does get best reviews.
Haven't used skype in years,,,, does it have a chat function? I mean is it like wechat / whatsapp now? when I used it it was just to make calls to the States....
icnif77:
Chat function at Skype? You can either speak to mic or write/chat messages and reply follows as soon as you write your own text and click 'send'.
When Internet connection is weak, so it doesn't support video with sound, you can revert to chat, i.e. writing of the messages.
Skype d/l is very short ... for some 250 MB ... you can try and see it by yourself.
Only problem at Skype I experienced is at weak Internet connection ... let say at interviews during the day time, they want to see and hear you ... and sound is not really clear. It breaks ... Now, at night time all that is much clearer.
Messages/chat works doesn't matter what ...
Are you putting the horse before the cart?
As I understand the news stories, the ban is about transactions (financial I assume). I didn't see where the app itself was being banned. But who knows. There may be a silver lining as all those annoying people in your pengyouquan are vanquished... Mwahaha
icnif77:
The ban is about app. Chinese app., which data's Bj. gov. can access it .. at least that was the reason for US ban. The ban's emphasis is on fin. transactions, but the whole app. will be banned. There is also prohibition for US gov. employees to use WeChat ...
I was reading complains of Chinese students and Chinese employees in West/USA ... how bad is this and that ... about WeChat ban.
What about GOOG, Reuters, FaceBlook and other US apps block since ever in China? We laowai never cried about that ..

The executive order took aim directly at WeChat, which has more than 1 billion users worldwide, and whose “data collection threatens to allow the Chinese Communist Party access to Americans’ personal and proprietary information,” the order said.

One day when China is in the middle class trap and not a predominate exporter, they will be going through all the financial transactions on we chat by Chinese Citizens to get unreported income tax to keep the country solvent. The irony is the people gave it to them blindly with no idea of the the long term consequences. With a falling GDP, ageing population, and whole world "decoupling", this may happen sooner than later.

I agree, Ambi. It was well planned ban ...
Was reading earlier article about 'Wolf-warrior' policy ... on Oz website. The world is turning away from China ... Chino-ambassador got kick-in-the-ass in Somalia ... LOL

As US Bans 'WeChat', Chinese Turn To 'Signal', But Decentralization Is The Answer
“Decentralized, open-source, and end-to-end encrypted,” he added. “You really need all three [with a messaging app].”
