Q: What is the best way to send stuff home?

I saw a nice mountain bike at the local cycle shop today; they are half the price than those back home in South Africa.  Is it worth the trouble to buy one here and send it back, and if so, what is the best way?

you have a couple options, you can take it home with you on the plane next time you go.  They do take sporting equiptment as luggage, so check out those prices..

We often need to send packages to our North American offices,  Fed ex is crazy expensive, and from china is much more than Hong Kong, so we have a small shipping company ( local, so probably cant help you, your gonna need to find a small one)  They take the packages across the border and send it from HK, Much much cheaper

I would not recommend sending anything valuable/new by post/courier.

both these options are very expensive when compared to an extra piece of luggage when traveling by plane.

example:

20 Kg would have cost me 1000 RMB by China post - not even a courier

but the same as extra luggage cost 300 RMB from Beijing to western Europe - 2 flights

I just priced shipping by extra baggage vs cargo, $1500 as baggage, $5000 as cargo. That was for 4 items.
