Q: What can we do to make EChinaCities better?
We don't spend enough time getting our users input, so this is your chance to talk to us. What can be improved? What would you like to see added? Taken away?
All suggestions welcome!
earthizen:
Please read user "lewn"'s response to my suggestion below, 'his' other libelous attacks and name calling under other threads. This is an obvious violation of ecc's policy, also exactly the kind of improvement that you have authority to work on.
It's not important but it might be interesting or humorous to be able to see who the serial down-voters are
Bring back the teaching jobs/non-teaching jobs search function in the jobs section please.
Stricter enforcement of site policy. "Keep it respectful: eChinacities.com promotes mutual respect........ Name-calling, bashing, insulting or berating others will not be tolerated......"
lewn:
You could try doing that yourself before suggesting others do it.
earthizen:
@lewn The system keeps track of the sequence of your attacking comments. Your framing tactic here simply proves, again, how low your integrity is.
earthizen:
Under the "What words come to your mind when you think of Mainlanders" you falsely accused me of using four accounts. "4 accounts on this thread are written by the same troll."
Other astute users already asked you to substantiate your accusation by naming those four accounts. You failed..
"expatlife26:
Who do you think are the same accounts. I'm just curious.
dongbeiren:
yea I'm curious who you think are the same accounts - you already accused earthizen I believe so what are his other accounts?
1 day 11 hours "
"Most people get 2 up-votes for a good post at best but his get like 6 or more even though they are inflammatory and bigoted nonsense."
Excellent reading skill considering RandomGuy got 11 votes for his best post, right at the top.
>
Now it is ten accounts.>
Where did you learn how to read? Don't you know the difference between prc mainlanders and chinese?
Even a kid can tell you are a libeler, and a stupid one.
You are the exact kind of libeler that the administrator of ecc needs to work on, under ecc's site policy.
aston.villa.f.c:
to make it better a person like you earthizen can take a bath once a day.
earthizen:
@aston....you would make better sense after draining those gutter oil out from your brain
aston.villa.f.c:
@ earthizen. i seldom eat in restaurants and am a very good cook. so try another suggestion in response to this one from me:- if you dont like it leave.
earthizen:
@aston.... When you are more knowledgeable about gutter oil you will change your comment. Another ignorant assumption, who told you one had to be PRC to make comments about it? You do know ecc is an internet website, right?
1. Permanently ban the trolls - there is no point in having rules and guidelines when the same trolls re-appear monthly.
2. Stickies! Commonly asked questions should be either allocated to a sticky or FAQ where the top-rated answers get to stay, the more than three down-votes are deleted.
3. Put the questions into their own forums by topic (as opposed to categorizing them).
4. Appoint forum members as moderators to deal with the day-to-day trolls and breaches of etiquette/forum guidelines, etc. Not as a means of censorship as the bleeding-heart liberals will bleat, but as a way of maintaining a sense of community and decorum.
5. Add an 'ignore' feature so that users can avoid those posters who just want attention.
6. Either identify paid contributors to the Blogs as 'paid content' or delete them, especially the copy-paste variety.
xunliang:
Yeah, how much do you want to bet none of these great ideas are implemented?
expatlife26:
Yeah those are all good ideas, the only problem would be downvoting stickies away because anybody could just make multiple accounts.
Like if I was trying to trash innocent CFTU members I could just make 5 accounts to downvote the poor devils post into oblivion.
But i'm totally in favor of a couple regulars being made moderators, just so a really obvious scammer troll or the next "Does Chinese Girl Think White Teacher = Lozer??" type of poster can be shut down before they get outta hand.
Shining_brow:
Re: 1 - there are some who have been labelled as 'trolls' who actually ask legitimate questions.
So, I'd suggest - delete the post, rather than attack the poster. Once X number of deletions have accrued (or, X% of posts), then ban them.
aston.villa.f.c:
8. make new users signing up recite the Chinese national anthem and upload a video of it to youkou.
9. have a button on each article page that gives a user of "leaving if they dont like it"
10. get sponsored by CCTV news.
No guest postings. If you want to say something, use your user name.
Fixing the avatar problem would be a good start.
Knowing who is down voting a post would help to identify some trolls you have around here.
Ignore user feature would be grat (it has been mentioned already)
Maybe a BCD category.
Bad China Day category available for regulars to vent without contaminating real good questions and answers..
Cynicism, Jokers, Whiners, you can be heard here amongst the other folks having a similar or not so similar bad day. Uncensored free for all, to comment on their bad day in China.
Shining_brow:
That's actually a good idea - and doesn't deserve the downs... probably from the wumaos who think that there is NEVER a reason to complain about living the life of luxury in Mao's great heaven on earth!
aston.villa.f.c:
good idea!
infact why not give fen qings, hypocrites who wear western clothes brands and japan bashers their own little section where they can rant until their heart's content and practice English at the same time.
Probably not easy or practical but... I'd love to see translated netizens comments to current news stories.
Add moar stories. Follow up on the stories would be nice… for Example: I was curious about that Changsha guy with 17 gfs, how did it end? Last I read he was charged of fraud, don’t know what happened next.
Answer section… make it easy to add photos and profile picture… probably with real picture the answer section will be more personalized.
Different section for the recent stories/pictures which are “hot topics” with Chinese netizens.
For obvious reasons, multiple account.
Shining_brow:
The issue with your first suggestion is that it's not really an ECC thing - most of those stories get dropped quickly, and end results never heard about. ECC is a forum, not a news agency - so they don't have journalists hunting out the news.
And, often, with other stories, you'll just never hear a final end to something, because various people don't want people to know about it.
I don't disagree at all with the idea, just saying it's not going to happen - though I'd really like it to!!!
Karma101:
Yep, that probably makes more sense... I know they don't hunt for stories, simply translate the famous stories. Usually there is a story change maybe every alternate day, and usually no story change during the weekend!
Fix that Answer of the Day glitch. I got 40 points for a teaching-related answer last week, but it still "all depends on the student!"
Even the lucky author is tired of seeing his own Answer of the Trimester every day.
-Some trolls have multiple accounts. Try to find ways to undermine this. Ban trolls if possible.
-More mods with powers to ban but give a week's 'holiday' then a month before permanent bans.
-Zero tolerance of racism, but understand the line between 'blowing off steam' over living in China. Or as BHGAL says BCD area.
-Mods can dump obvious troll created questions designed to incite bigoted and racist generalizations.
+1 Sinobear with:
-stickies
-ignore
-paid spam
I don't mind it the way it is. I've had a good spell away and it seems like I'm back looking tonight.
If I'm not interested in whatever I don't bother with it.
The site doesn't seem too radical to me and I'm somewhat of a conservative with slight left/centre leanings.
I have no idea what the points tally even means. Who cares about that anyway. What...I can win an umbrella?
Get more women to post here... they always have a great balance to all our testosterone-fed rage.
Give notifications for comments and not just answers. Sometimes people will get into longer conversations and there is no short way to know if there has been a reply.
I guess it would also curb bumping, even a little bit.
The pictures are a common complaint, shouldnt be too hard to make it a little more user friendly.
You have mentioned before that you know people have conversations with themselves. So knowing who has multiple accounts would make it easier to stop that wouldnt it?
I disagree with having user mods. There is no situation where power tripping doesnt happen. Fair and balanced are not adjectives that fit pretty much anyone on this site. If you dont think English teachers are a gift from God and that China has never done a single thing right you will be banned quickly.
Shining_brow:
User mods is the smartest thing to do... otherwise, you're expecting people who are not really a part of the forum making decisions on posts that they have nothing to do with.
Having user mods is much better than having no mods - which seems to be what's been going on for a while.
expatlife26:
yeah i agree about the notifications for comments. If I post a comment that starts a convo I'll get notifications for every time somebody posts in response. But if I start a convo off somebody elses comment I have no way of knowing if they keep it going.
I'll want to go and check it and I don't always remember which question it was connected to. Can be a pain to find it.
Like I just commented on mike's answer here. Mike will get a notice about that, but if he replies to me or shiningbrow or anybody else does I'll have to remember that this is where that convo is taking place and go check it. I should get noticies here too.

add the date the question was made in the title above somewhere.
like it is here...
Q:What can we do to make EChinaCities better?
Add a notification at the top of old, recycled article re-posts.
Add a notification at the top of old, recycled article re-posts.
more than just 10 messages showing on the messages page - for those of us who hoard, instead of delete.
since articles required users to be logged in there has been a massive drop in replies on articles. to make it better you could allow replies from non-registered and registered users. e china cities was much better in the old format where people could leave responses without having to sign up.
aston.villa.f.c:
just remember that articles used to allow free comment, mostly un moderated unless reported. the site was a lot more busy in those days and was much more fun to read.
