Q: What can your embassy really do?

Seriously, what did the US embassy do for the hikers arrested in Iran or North Korea; or Amanda Knox in Italy.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

If you are arrested in China, your embassy can't even obtain access to you until the Chinese Government says so. You think the Embassy is going to request the Navy Seals to break you out of a Chinese prison just because you were unfairly arrested and incarcerated?

As long as you are in China, you are subject to CHINA!

That's right Martin. There's very little an embassy can do once you get caught breaking the law here in China, but that goes for any embassy in the world. You just have to respect a country's laws and not break them and then you should have nothing to worry about.
But I do think embassies do good work too and are a welcome presence in any host country. They do help to negotiate on your behalf, contact your family when you're in trouble or dead, and send you useful info or advise from time to time. They can also act as a safe haven or refuge in times of need. I've registered with my embassy and feel more at ease knowing that they know I'm here in China. Wink

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
