Q: What is Changsha like?

Well I made it. I am currently sat overlooking part of Shenzhen in the Jiang Tian area near to the Futian Middle School. Tomorrow morning I am getting on the train for Changsha where I shall be teaching.

There does not seem to be a lot of information on the area. So I was wondering if anyone else was there or if they still are, that can give me some information on what to expect on the area?  i.e. Things to see, to do, to eat and even where some of the expat bars are?

I am really looking forward to the beginning of my new life.

- Not very international, I've been there for days without seeing another laowei, I find that people stare much much more at the tall stranger than at home in Zhuhai

- Main attraction is the birthplace of Mao

- Secondary attraction is a giant Mao head in the river

- Food is spicy, be prepared. Near the central train station is a restaurant that boasts having "stinky tofu" "just the way Mao liked it". It's spicy as hell and not very tasty in my mind.

Welcome to China

Edit Changsha of course has the prettiest girls of anywhere, well at least had.

Tall? I've seen like one other tall foreigner there. Did I give you my queue position at an ATM near Walmart? angry

Scandinavian:

You mean Walmart down at the end of the shopping street ? No you didn't have never used an ATM there. I do circle that area each time I am in Changsha though. Starbucks and the place close to Walmart, sidestreet to the shopping street, where there is a place selling fried dumplings.

Hulk:

I disagree. Changsha's women weren't too pretty in my eyes. Some of the countryside girls on the other hand... Not too bad. But really.... I've seen much better on average in other cities and provinces.

My sincere lobotomies... err, apologies. Changsha is worse than Wuhan. I'm sorry, but Changsha was the most painful experience I've been through in a long time. I'm honestly really sorry. If you want more details about Changsha, I can give you some recommendations on where to go... what district will you be in?

DaveP84:

I am not sure yet which district I shall be in. I know the Kindergarten I will be teaching in is very new and that there are other English teachers there already. So not all hope is lost just yet.

Is it Happy C.E.A. or American Baby? Both are trash, and there aren't actually any other foreign teachers there. Be careful, and make sure you have your visa situation handled... neither of them can give you that, that's why they've been hiring exclusively non-natives who disappear once their L/F visas expire.

Oh. Changsha of course also is the place where the worlds tallest building will go up, and most likely down in the near future. I would love some photo's of this building.

Oh dear. Just for future reference, it is probably wise to find out about the school and city you will be working in BEFORE you leave for China, not when you have already arrived.

Please don't tell me they are going to organise your Z visa when you get there...

I have my z visa already. The school is King Kindergarten. It is very new!

Traveler:

Glad to hear you have the visa. When you get a Chinese girlfriend, get her to check the name of the company the Z visa is issued for. Just in case...

Schools generally have to be open for two years before they are allowed to hire foreigners. Often, if the teachers aren't properly qualified, the schools will get a visa for another company.
