Sign up with Google Sign up with FacebookQ: what is china's reaction to the usa building military bases in Australia?
ireally want to know what aussies think. personally i hate the idea of it unless Australia requested it and they 're footing the bill.
This is my viewpoint.... America is realizing that the need to have bases all over and as many friends they can get. They want to be no1 in everything and see that China/Russia/ North Korea is a big tread to them. China mostly financially.
I know China isn't happy about it. If 2500 US troops is scaring them....
Oh relax.. I'm kidding. Maybe.
They are using a pre-existing base, so no new bases are being built.
This is mostly symbolic, and if the Aussies want them there then no foul.
Of course China has voiced displeasure, because they have started to play bully in the South China Sea with neighbors and it might not be so easy anymore.
I'm not a Aussi as you requested but here are my 2 cents. China don't care about it as they know that US need to borrow more money from them to finance it and in the mean time having more power to say that they need to use a certain amount of it to buy goods here. this is a win/win situation. Whole the world doesn't has cash anymore simply because we have brought it here the last decades to buy goods, now we need to borrow it again and this has consequences and as long as we are not going to accept it we will stay in this recession. Sorry that the answer is a little bit off topic but that is the global idea, as told before just my 2 cents.
Waiting for attack
I think it is just another way to take the focas off other issuses and a chance for our PM to try and improve her award winning popularity
There is already a giant lissiening station called pine gap that the USA built in the 1980s
We didnt think to much of that either.
It is funny to think that the Japanese navy protected the Australian coast line in ww1 and Australia built forts to protect our ports fro the US in the 1700s
so maybe China will build a space launch pad in Australia one day
The world is a weird and funny place

I agree. The military bases have always been there. It just seems they are reviewing their position with them. It is nothing new. As you said, just a normal tactic to try to divert attention from the real issues of Gillard's ineffectiveness as a leader. So "Yes Minister"...
They're shaking their fists and stomping their feet like usual. China has been checkmated. They're surrounded and now they're pooping bricks over America's new bunker buster bomb that could take out most of China's underground bases and the US's hyper sonic missile that can go over 5 times the speed of sound. Funny thing is, if China had been more open and cooperative with the US on security issues then things wouldn't have escalated to the point they have.
Traveler:
You are correct in saying they are surrounded. When I worked out of Parliament House in Australia, we were all aware that the military and security alliances Prime Minister Howard was making were just as much for US benefit as for Australia's defence. With the US bases already firmly established in Australia, and Australia's strengthening of military and security cooperation with India, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines and reportedly Russia, as well as some SE Asian nations, Australian (and de facto US) allies are able to watch China carefully from all sides.
Who cares what China thinks, they should stay out of the issues of other countries.
nevermind:
No, if Austrrlia and the USA want to have military cooperation that is THEIR business, not China's.
usa doesnt' want to see china in a major military combat. they are having enough problems with the sandal wearing peasants of iraq and afghanistan. 40,000 taliban and under 100 al queda got the us warmachine bogged down. All china has to do is sit back and watch and keep building their army. then in 20 years when america has had enough in the middle east, make their move.
crimochina:
because we are not even trying in those countries. remember which country has the most carriers the most experience soldiers and the most nukes.

I think there is a reason that China, in it's 5,000 year history, has never had a war outside it's disputed borders, and is repeatedly occupied by other countries. It's forces are constantly tied up dealing with it's own internal problems. And anyone that has done any military training will know that the "compulsory military training" at school and university is all for show. One would have to wonder how many soldiers are actually ready for battle, or how effective they would be.
nevermind:
HAHHAAH I had a friend who got really drunk with a Colonel in the Chinese military one night and in a moment of honesty the guy said, "I'm hope we never have to go to war against the US cause we couldn't win" Let's see China try to take Iraq or something...... then they can talk. CHINA HAS NEVER WON A WAR
Shining_brow:
Actually, I think China would do well enough in Iraq... cos they wouldn't really care about casualties, and just level the whole place. The problem the UN-backed mission had was in trying NOT to inflict such suffering.

War is one big prick waving contest, oh look some brown people lets get em'
