Q: What is a Chinese food that you would never try?

As for me, I'm not sure. There are already some things I have tried that I didn't think I would, and even chicken feet may be an option someday. One thing I think I would never eat are brains, or those drunken shrimp? I tried the century eggs. It was ok.

I don't think I'll be eating pig penis, but I did try goat balls and they were pretty gross. I don't think I'd eat live monkey brains, dead brains are fine by me.

Chicken feet aren't bad, if they're cooked right. Not my favourite, but I don't turn them down. Goose feet are actually pretty good. Pigs' hooves are the grossest and chewiest.

Nope. Sorry. No chicken feet for this one. Oh, and the previously mentioned danglies. I don't do feet, ears, noses, tongues, eyeballs (or any other round things), or internal organs.

Seriously, since I've been in China, I've never eaten so many veggies! At least I know what they are.

Dog or cat. Not willingly. Not if I know it's dog or cat. And nothing endangered. And nothing with eyes live. And I don't know about those century eggs. I've seen how they are made.

I will try to eat almost ( to me) anything normal once. I do not think we regard other species with the respect we should. It bothers me that I even eat chicken. With some species like cat and dog, I think is just so morally wrong to eat them. They evolved to live with us as companions and partners. The animals all think and feel, even the chicken. In this respect as high as we are supposed to be evolved, I think we act like the lowest of savages.
Maybe thats what we really are. We still have war. Have you ever put down a pet? I put my dog down last year. She had cancer and was too anemic to continue. Nothing wants to die.

Dog. I dont care who makes it or how much face X will lose, I will not eat dog under any condition at all.

giadrosich:

True story. My wife's father's brother lives out in the countryside. We go out there every year for Tomb Sweeping Day. The first year, we went out and had a great time. He had three dogs, lots of geese, chickens, and goats running around. About three months later we went out again. I casually noticed there were only two dogs running around the property. Didn't think too much about it.

There is always lots of folks for lunch at these gatherings, with lots of different dishes; farm fresh veggies, chicken, pig, etc., so when we sat down to eat, you know how often, someone will be nice and put something in your dish? Yeah, well, they do that to me ALL the time. I've learned long ago to just accept it and eat the food. So, someone gave me some meat that was really, really spicy. I ate it, but not much (a bite or two), as there was some other dishes that I preferred more, like the pork and green peppers.

Anyway, you guessed it. The dogs weren't pets, but live stock, and the reason why there were only two running around that day is because the third was committed to the afternoon meal.

So, watch what people give you, 'cause you never know!

Yeah, something like that happened to me too. I was at a student's house for Spring Festival, and her grandma elbowed me and said Chinese I didn't understand, pointing to a dish. I didn't want to be rude so I ate a little bit and it was dog meat. To be honest, you can't really tell what it is once it's on a plate. It just looks like meat. If I had known, I wouldn't have touched it.

There are lots of foods I wouldn't eat here, yet when I mention that kangaroo meat is sold in Australian supermarkets, for human consumption, Chinese seem horrified for some reason.

I guess all countries have food that is considered offensive by at least some other countries.

If you REALLY wanna horify them, just say you "read somewhere" aboutg people eating "panda burgers".:-P

I have done that one, and used a photo of a restaurant at Bangkok Airport, which has the sign "Panda- Ready To Eat" outside it :-)

The live monkey brain.  Too much person history.  I'd probally just sit in the corner and cry like a little girl.

HugAPanda:

awww...huggies! And (insensitively, she asks) what is... how.. huh? live monkey brain? Maybe I'll join you in the corner and cry too.

I agree with DaBen, I think the live monkey brain thing is despicable and would never try it... though I am being a bit hypocritical since I have eaten live octopus on numerous occasions and like it. Also cat. who the hell would want to eat a cat.

But as for just about anything else, Im willing to try it once... not that I would order water buffalo penis for myself, but I have been duped into eating it.

Well, once I would have said brains, but I unwittingly ate some at a hot pot restaurant in Hefei and they were delicious.  I wouldn't have eaten if I had known beforehand, but...
Before I came to China, I was a vegetarian.   My goal is to return to that lifestyle.

I am like DaBen on this one.  I saw a live monkey strapped under a table, and the top of his head removed while still alive for those eating to jump with chopticks on his brain.  That happened in Beijing, near Tianamen Sq, at a local restaurant.  I could not stand it, I left the restaurant without eating.  Maybe some insects too like roaches, lizzards, grasshopers and such.

Any kind of brains. Not that I'm squeamish but for the simple fact that brains have spinal fluid and that stuff will mess you up. That's where mad cow disease and a bunch of other neurological diseases come from.

DaBen:

But you can squish it through your teeth like jello. That fun alone has to be worth the mad cow.

Live monkey brains,, ok now I'm starting to not like China,, no way I could sit in a restaurant and watch them do that do the monkey. I get arrested because I'd freak and get into a fight with the whole table.  Smash everything I could. If I could I would try to stop them from harming the monkey,, that is so cruel. How far can I go before I'd be cained?

GuilinRaf:

I have lived in China for nearly 5 yaers, Guilin for most of those and Beijing as of august, and to be honest, I have never seen this. Oh God! Now I sound like a wumao!!!!:'-(

I would freak out too. I don't think I'd get belligerent on the diners, but I would probably start crying, hard, scream, and throw up. I think that's the one thing I wouldn't be able to handle at all. LOL I'm tearing up right now just thinking about it.
