Q: What Chinese word took you the longest to remember?

For some reason certain words are super easy for me to remember, while others, not even particularly difficult per se, just don't register in my brain.

'Eyes' and 'glasses' ('yanjing' and 'yanjing'); I get the tones for these mixed up constantly. That's where the problem lies, in creating mental blocks around certain words.

Many of my students have the same problem with 'potato' and 'tomato', so I always teach them to remember that "Tom the tomato's hair is bright bright red", then I tell them to piss off out of my office, i'm playing video games.

GuilinRaf:

I use this trick:

For glasses you use fourth tone. Why? Four eyes, fourth tone.

Well its weird how some words just wont stick. The two that Ive learned and forgot the most are "or" (always confuse 还是 and 还有) and "The UN" 联合国. I looked up both on my phone dictionary today for the umpteenth time.

....sad thing is I will probably have to look them up again next time.

"Forest"

Seriously. I finally remembered how to say "tree" after about 5 years learning Chinese, but Forest... I just won't remember. And that's still after getting quite a good Chinese from 3 years in China's "best" Chinese-teaching University.
