Q: What day do CNY fireworks start exactly?
Okay, so I was invited to a dinner with a close Chinese friend on Friday. They referred to it as "Chinese New Year's Eve" (in English). This later got me thinking, which day do the midnight fireworks start? Is it this Friday or Saturday night? Sorry to ask such a stupid question.
Friday Saturday all have fireworks in the night. especially in Saturday. Enjoy it!
No no no no.... it\s not 'when do they start?', the question ought to be 'when do they stop?'.. and the answer is - never! For the rest of the year... every day, most hours, someone is still celebrating CNY with fireworks.....
(ok, the real one's tend to go the same time ours do - midnight! However, there's often a precursor session around 9pm)
As for the day - same as us...00:00 on the 1st Jan.
(as for this year... I still haven't worked out when anything is
)
Yeah....still really confused about this.
I guess what I mean is, when is the first "big" midnight celebration (I know people are already launching stuff at random).
Last year, I was down by the Lama Temple and things got crazy at midnight for the start of the holiday. I'd like to repeat that experience, but I don't want to trek down there on the wrong night. So....Friday or Saturday at midnight? which one is technically the start of the holiday?
Thanks!
boomsticks:
Don't hold me to this...but I've been told its Saturday night that's the actual New Years Eve.
However, I've also been told (its my first CNY) that timing concerning fireworks is utterly arbitrary for the most part. Essentially, expect them all the time!
Not a moment too late as far as i'm concerned. My question is never 'When will they start?' but 'When the bloody hell are they going to stop?' And now i've got a kid who i'm going to have to get off to sleep five times a night because it sounds like a bad day in Bosnia outside the window. Yeesh.
:
Haha, apparently I am the only expat in China that likes watching a crap-ton of fireworks go off all at once. Oh well.
I understand about the kid though.
The first day of the Chinese New Year (year of the Snake btw) is Sunday 10th Feb, so the major fireworks will start before evening meal on Saturday night and continue well into the morning of Sunday. (And as others have said probably well into August too).
tang-peter: I love the fireworks too, on CNY at least, the random 2am ones in mid May I can well do without.
It should start just about...... wait for it..... waiiiit...... NOW
Actually I hear very little, kids playing with firecrackers or something. We live in a non-fireworks zone. Some provinces have rules about where fireworks can be used, Guangdong is one of them.
They will start anytime, for any reason. Before moving to a new apartment to scare bad spirits away, at a temple, at a funeral or wedding, or for whatever.
Now, as far as CNY, the important night is Saturday at midnight. But at my place, firecrackers are already going on since 3 days ago, and every evening gets worse.
On my first CNY in China, I shot a one hour video, from 23:30 until 00:30, and it was a solid hour of thousands of firecrackers/fireworks going off. Everyone that sees it is amazed by the shear number and explosions. My apartment faces the local river, and from the balcony I do get a view of maybe 3 miles towards the East, and 2 miles towards the west. And like I said, it was worse than Vietnam.......
I already bought a package of cotton balls to place on my ears.......
so I can ![]()
