Q: What did you HAVE TO bring to China?

I don't mean clothes and passports, I mean the unusual necessities you just couldn't live without. For me it was a cd called 'Friday Night in San Francisco' featuring the music of Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin, a picture of my family, a book called 'The Prophet' by Kahlil Gibrhan, some Marmite, a lighter bought in Greece, a fake thumb used for magic tricks, a multi-plug socket, universal wireless, hair-net, dildo, some motzerella cheese, and a 'Create Your Own Classroom' handbook by Hodder and Staunton. Everything else I picked up when I got here.

  So what of you?

It's going to sound ridiculous but last time I went home (over the holidays), I brought a suitcase entirely filled with food back. Nothing that I couldn't get here necessarily, but a lot of things are infinitely cheaper back home. An Italian friend of mine does the same thing - entire suitcase full of prosciutto and Parmesan.

I bring my Sansa Fuze with a 16gb microSD full of music, about 15 books, real jeans, socks and underwear, diplomas, tools and various electronics. Oh, and the laptop.

I should start bringing food.

Noise cancelling headphones.  Makes the long ass plane ride much more bearable, and of course has their uses whilst in China as well.

I brought 2 cameras, good champagne. I should have brought my winter coat which I left at home. Guilin is same latitude as Miami right? Palm trees, trees have leafs all year, really dumb stupid me, took 2 weeks to find a coat big enough to fit me. How can it be that cold and not snow? Cold rain is just miserable, I'll take snow any day.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
