Q: What do I need to get into a teaching position in a Drama University in China?

I have 33 years of Drama experience including teaching, stage directing, acting, voice training/coaching, etc. etc.

I have an Honnors Degree in Dramatic Arts.

I would love to get involved at a University in China to teach any Dramatic Arts.

I'm very well skilled in training/coaching actors and acting students.

What qualifications do I need to be able to work at Universities in China?

With the covid situation being what it is I don't know if anyone is really looking for teachers unless they're already in the country since nobody can go to China at the moment but that aside, you could try contacting drama schools, international schools and unis directly to see if they're hiring.

First and foremost, can you speak Chinese? I would think that you would need to speak the local language for such a position. You will also need to have all the proper paperwork and visa requirements as a foreign teacher.

I too teach and direct drama, but not in the sense that you are looking for. I am an ESL teacher. I have taught at my high school for six years. Five years ago, I did a project with our international students where we did a theatrical reading of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. It started off with the idea that we would do a performance strictly focused in theatrical voice usage in the reading. As we rehearsed, the kids wanted costumes, so we did that. We then added narrators to help tell the story in Chinese. On the small stage in the auditorium theater, they decorated it. It was such a success, the following year, we did a full theatrical production in our 800 seat theater, complete with stage design, lights and sound...all run by the students.

The following year, I got a little more ambitious. We did the musical "Fiddler on the Roof". Over 70 students participated in this project.

We have learned much during the four years of productions. Since the audience is mostly Chinese, and the plays are done in English, we required narrators to speak in Chinese to help tell the story at the beginning of each scene. The acting and stage performance helps tell the story in English. It has been a huge success.

I have had to rewrite the scripts to downgrade the level of English to high school ESL levels. We are using both "A Christmas Carol" and "Fiddler on the Roof" in alternating years. Every two years, we get a new group of students in our department, and the audience is new too. By using these two performances, we can recycle the performances, adding and changing to make them better each time we use them.

With all that said, perhaps you too can get your foot in the door, and then develop the Drama part. I also developed a Drama Club for the extra curricular program.

If you do not pigeon hole yourself just to university level, occassionally there are schools looking for drama teachers to add to their departments. I have found that Chinese schools with international departments are very open in expanding the experiences for their students and will accept many new projects. I have developed a Connect 4 tournament, our kids develop their own children's books, and the posters we produce are used to decorate the walls of the school as an art gallery. If you are flexiable and willing to work with the administration, gain their trust and respect, they will be willing to return the the trust and respect (in my experiences).

By the way, I normally teach Reading and Writing. When I did not like how the writing textbook was written, I wrote my own and we now use my textbook in the classroom. Many things are possible with an administration that is open to new ideas.&nbsp;</p>

Hi, thank you so much for your detailed answerwink What you are describing is very much what I'm doing as well. I'm a qualified Theatre Practitioner, so, Theatre is my first love, but Stage Directing and Teaching goes hand in hand. My love for children makes me time and again end up as a Drama TeacherindecisionAfter many years I broadened my horizons to China for the first time in August 2019 and was at an International School. We were allowed to return to our home countries in February due to the Covid19 outbreak for a little gap, but things went South and we couldn't return and had to continue with online teaching for the school for the rest of the 2019-2020 Academic year! I now want to find another Drama Teacher position for 2020-2021 in China. Things are quite upside down with the Covid19, but I'm on the look out

How long have you been teaching in China? You sound quite well-settled and happy and innovative

Any input is much appreciatedlaugh

If you simply put "Drama Teacher" into the job search on this site, you will find many opportunities. The biggest problem is getting back into China if you are outside of the country.

To be properly qualified, ideally you should be white, have low self esteem, no dignity, high functioning mental illness, functional alcoholism, and warrants in your home countrycountry. A history of drug abuse and unconventional personal pronouns are optional.

The usual qualifications that you would expect for such a position wouldn't be required to secure a job in China.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
