I generally try to ignore them but some can be really aggressive. How do you handle it?

Well the ones that have no legs and are laying on the ground are easy to avoid. I just step over them after seeing how much they have in their tin?
Seriously, if I have a few kwai in my pocket getting rid of the small stuff by handing it to beggars is better than accumulating it in a jar or tin for years and never using it! If they give you a funny look because the amount is so small then I ask for it back.
I simply ignore them. I can easily stare into the distance even if they are bumping my stomach with their tin
I remember there was one time where there was an older man with a tin shaking it at me for several minutes. Usually I don't give money, but I might have in that case just to make him go away. Unfortunately I didn't have anything on me at the time. The only reason I didn't give money in that city is because I was one of the only foreigners there and it was obvious a few of them targeted me just for being a foreigner. I was afraid it would be worse if I gave anyone money.
walk fast past them or walk them into a pole or a wall
I give them small change up to about 5 RMB. Why not, it's less than a dollar. The only exception is if they're in a place I must frequent. Then I smile and act like I don't speak Chinese.
crimochina:
that is exactly the problem, it rewards their bad behavior

I approach it thus: some must beg, some are frauds. I would like to help those who need help, but I cannot conduct an instantaneous test to determine who is who so I give a little. I won't apologize for giving away a few kuai. Do what you like with your money, I'll do as I wish with mine.
A full power rabbit punch to the larynx immediately followed by a raised knee to the nose will usually put them down, follow this up with a stamp to the side of the jaw is often fatal.
Of course an alternative is to walk past as if you've never seen them.
I don't mind give some change from time to time to old begging women, or to people who try to make surviving with doing some work. There was a guy I remember, with completely burned skin, with no arms, yet he was making drawing with having brush in his mouth. Respect to that guy, how hard your life can be.
That been said, beggars who bump into you and try to extort money aggressively, never get my attention. Same goes, when I eat or on subway. Being bumped and ignore it should come with experience from crowded buses and subways though.
I usually ignore them.
But because I have a problem with my ankle, I have to walk with a stick for support.
It would also make a useful weapon if waved at them
So maybe you should walk with a stick..
The alternative is to tell them to go away, which in mandarin is Zhou Kai.
The amputees used to be normal children that were kidnapped off the street and had a limb removed so that the people would feel sorry for them and give them money but this money always went back to the person's owners, so do not give as it would encourage this practice to continue.
There are a few genuine cases because Chinese do not operate a benefit society but it is difficult to sort the wheat out from the chaff.
Do not be distracted and always keep your eyes open and your mind alert.for any eventuality and keep your valuables safe about you, remember some of the citizens of this wonderful country have the talent for removing wallets from your back pockets with chop sticks and you do not feel a thing.
Be careful, remember a lot of people do not have money especially around the Chinese New Year, which is coming soon.
