Maybe it's because of my devilish good looks, maybe because I am the only blonde-haired foreigner in this city. But I am being video-taped or having my picture taken on a weekly basis. I can't escape it sometimes. Most of them do not stop when I see them doing it, and they sometimes even walk right up to me to get a better view. A few times even inside a KFC, a girl walked right up to my table to video me while I ate.
I don't mind it most the times and I just smile, but sometimes if I am sick or in a bad mood I want to grab the phone out of their hands.
What would you do?
Grab their camera and rip out the film/memory card....
What would Jesus do?
JungleLife:
Yes, I may have to. I thought about grabbing the device and deleting the pic/vid, but I won't be able to understand the Chinese characters to do so.
snowballeffect:
In that case just grab the camera, drop it to the floor and stamp on it several times until you think it won't work anymore......good luck!
I am also cursed with being blonde and living in a place with almost no foreigners let alone blonde ones.
Do what I do. When they start filming or take pictures or stare, just stick your middle finger right up your nose while staring at them. It freaks them out and gives them the bird at the same time. Trust me it works.
This of course is only when I am not with my gf who would rip them a new one if they tried that shit with her beside me.
Chinese take picture show police filth in china. You so ugly we wonder why you allowed to leave home country.
crimochina:
"You so ugly we wonder why you allowed to leave home country."
if you had the ability to think you would know why that statement makes no sense what so everr
I've never been filmed or had pictures taken (except for strangers who wanted to take a picture with me) but I've certainly been starred at. I agree with you, it's really annoying when you're having a bad day or are already in a bad mood.
Same thing happened to me when I was in Hong Kong a long time ago, I had a bunch of women squeeling, eminem, eminem. It didn't bother me much and I kind of enjoyed the attention, but it was only for a week. To tell you the truth I look nothing like the guy and if I was having a bad day, it might even make me laugh. Just do something goofy, who knows it might cheer up your mood.
I say: 20 kuai per photo, look at them seriously and slowly walk away.
this is where you must remember you are dealing with ignorant people. and sadly you must be patient or else you might end up on chinasmack contributing to the anti foreigner sentiment.
i see it this way, my being a foreigner gets me more pay than a local, less working hours, more girls, so if i'm going to accept the celebrity lifestyle, i must accept the downside.
also this is china. after i am done here , i will go home. nothing that happens here will effect me when i'm back in civilization (unless i do something major)
because it means nothing, pick your battles.
listen people in china are rude and ignorant. and sadly in many ways they are more rude and ignorant when dealing with foreigners. are you going to fight everyone in the street? everyday? every hour?
china is a constant exercise in patience.
The stares, picture taking, and "HALLO HAO ER YU"s are pretty commonplace at this point. Have yet to experience being videotaped....not sure what I would do. Good mood/situation, probably just smile, play the role of the stupid monkey. Bad mood....try my best to implement Crimo's patience mantra. Easier said than done sometimes.
