They no longer cut in front of me because I use my wushu pro-active blocking moves. It works well. The annoying thing is that when in line you must constantly guard your position. It's maddening.

This one time (gratuitous and barely interesting story follows, but this is a gratuitous and barely interesting question to begin with) I was in line at KFC when a well-dressed lady tried to cut in front of me. I blocked her so she tried to cut in front of a lady in another line. She was blocked again, so she left. I guess she was only hungry if she could cut in front of someone else.
I answered this question primarily because it's one of the few I can view with my ISP. LOL oh my gosh this is annoying ...

I used to be passive, but now? Queue Hulk physically returns them to the correct queue position, regardless of age or gender, and then assumes his previous position.

Yes, a most annoying way in China but I learned to manage it:

if someone cuts in front of me I say nothing but simply cut in front of that person as well.

If they want to make this a game, I say 'bring it on' - I will be relentless, but I will not get into a fight since we as lao wai will always be deemed guilty by police. I also yell at them in a foreign non-Chinese language or, I make one up.

It depends on how big they are. Little ones I pick up and throw in the street. Big ones. I say nice move and push them out of the way and return to my oridginal possition. I am big. Franck3

A stern "Hey" usually gets their attention.  That's often followed by a look of disbelief and the offender slinking to the back of the line in shame.  If not, I usually go block them out NBA style.

I have a lot of hates here in China.  In fact, I had never had a real fight before I arrived in China, but now, since arriving nearly four years, I have had five at least.

Two were with queue-jumpers.

One was when I was second-in-line.  The man in front just finished, and at that same moment, a third man came in and pointed his money in front to get cigarettes.  I moved his arm out the way and said I was first.  He then got angry with me, so I pushed him all the way back, out the shop, and nearly knocked over a parked moped on the way out.  I then came back in the shop and proceeded to be served by the now shaken shop assistant.  I apologised to her in Chinese and left.

Another time, I was in KFC.  My ex-wife and I were queuing when this group tried pushing in.  My ex-wife stopped the girl from pushing in, but then the guys tried it.  Big mistake.  I pulled one of them back.  Almost had a fight until they apologised and backed down.

A third occasion, where I did not fight, was in the centre of Chengdu.  The local police etc had not long started forcing people to queue in an orderly manner for their taxis - a very welcome introduction, and proof that the Government are trying to make this country better - much against the wishes of 90% of the Chinese population.

Anyway, of all people, a foreign man was trying to play stupid by going up to one of the taxi marshalls and he asked about getting a taxi.  He then went to open the back door of a taxi which was stopping.  The marshall had already told him in Chinese to go and queue up, so when he went to open the door, I said, "She said go and queue up like everyone else has to and stop letting the side down".  He sheepishly obeyed and went back to what was a very long queue.

Why did he have to try being such a prick?

GuilinRaf:

Re: Taxy Foreigner Prick

He may be a prick, or he may have been so tired after years of this that he finally gave in and started to do the same (a.k.a. "Going native").

Still, it was a prickish thing to do....

I agree with your point.  However, I always believe I am better than them.  I just happen to fight back sometimes.

I'm generally too nice (read: stupid) to do anything. I just walk ahead of the line cutter, or tell him to get in line nicely. Needless to say, it rarely works, because manners and respect are for the lower, un-evolved western monkeys.

About 2 years ago a guy cut in line at Mc Donald's and I nicely told him I was there first. He had that "holier-than-thou" attitude, and replied "I was here first". I try to shove him back, but to no avail, and I didn't want it to become a fight, or make a scene (You know how Chinese people love to judge foreigners - it would have been my fault and all over the internet). The waiter, who clearly saw him cut in line, simply took his order.

Long story short, I've been trying to mentally give that douche cancer almost every day since this happened. I have a huge grudge against someone for something so trivial, and I know it's stupid. But fuck that guy. He is my arch nemesis now.  I hope he will never see even a tiny glimmer of hope or happiness ever again. I hope the rest of his life will only be misery, sadness and deep depression, and that he dies slowly and painfully. I have never hated a man with such burning hatred. I'm sweating from anger just remembering it.

I can forgive a lot of things, since I'm too nice and tend to forget anyway. But there should be a death penalty for line cutters.

GuilinRaf:

What works for me, especially if at the supermarket where they have one of those laser-price checkers, is to wave one of my purchases on the scanner many times, whenever they reach for a product. This pucks up the tally and they have to start again or continuously delete the last "entries".

Eventually, they get so fed up they price up my water bottle and I go merrily on my way.

a firm tap on the shoulder with a death stare (angry black man stare works also). luckily that always works for me, phase 2 is me having to flee the country.

If I'm within arm range I'll push them out of the way, and if they try to fight back........... well let's just say, so far those that tried lost! devil

However, if they're not in arm range I'm not going to get out of the melee I'm in to move them as then the rest of the crowd won't let me back in to where I was, so in that situation I have to just grin and bear it.

A:I'll give my two cents on the age part. It's not as easy but can definitely be done. I was 21, fresh out of university and landed my first teaching job in china as a homeroom kindergarten teacher on a pretty standard 20,000/month salary. I'm 1 year in now and am still happy. Pretty much all international kindergarten jobs on here want 2 years experience, but many will still accept if you have experience in your home country. With that being said, being white and having a nice looking face is much more of a decision factor in china vs the west, if you can- use it to your advantage. Good luck finding something! -- brinsleym
