Q: What do you do when you can't sleep?

Gave the young'n his nightly feed an hour and a half ago and I still can't settle back down to sleep. It turned 4.30 and a cockeral crowed out. For the briefest of moments I actually found myself thinking "Jesus, that opera singer downstairs sounds really really drunk." Now i'm writing this in a daze and am about to head outside for a smoke and a glass of scotch. Waht to do poeple? Hlep.

PS: Yeh, I know the scotch is a bad idea.

Read a book, or, even though it sounds like a stupid advice a hippie would give you, empty your mind, "picture yourself in your happy place" or something.

mArtiAn:

Cheers, but my happy place is closed. Last orders were at 2.30 and they say they'll call the police if I keep knocking.

Alcohol makes you hyperactive. It is not recommended for sleeping, unless you drink whole bottle, and pass out, what I don't suggest.

Don't eat heavy digestive food (meat, fat, beans, raw fish) at least 3 hours before bed time. You will not sleep well with your stomach full. Your dinner should consist of lighty digestive food.

Try to walk as much as you can during the day. If you can't, you must include physical exercise in your daily routine. Purpose of exercising is to make yourself physically tired. If you work long hours during the day (like me), exercising is not necessary. Don't sleep or nap during the day.

Drink mint and chamomile tea, and (or) milk before sleep. You can ask any Chinese 'shaman', what 'green stuff' (tea) is good for sleep.

Your bed or your sleeping position on the bed can be problem too. Maybe you should move your bed around your apartment, and find suitable (different) place for it. I like to have my bed by the window.

On the bed itself, try and switch your position for 180*.

Turn off the music, or lower volume till you can barely hear music.

mArtiAn:

Ok, so basically don't eat meat, don't drink booze, drink chamomile tea, and get lots of exercise.

I'm never going to sleep again.

wake up the wife and challenge the one child policy !

mArtiAn:

I did that but she wasn't having any of it. I had to wait till she was asleep and try backdoor diplomacy. After that I still couldn't sleep AND my balls hurt.

If you cannot sleep get up and do something. Trying to sleep will not make it happen.

In the long run, a stable sleep pattern will help, always put the little one to bed at the same time, and you and the wife as well. The more of a rhythm you have the easier it gets. Also some exercise during the day, not close to sleeping will help

Basically none of the advice in this thread will actually work, mine included (except to challenge the one child policy if consensus can be made around the idea) and most of them work as a placebo. If you think it will work, it might. If you don't think it will work it most certainly will not. If you look to pharmaceuticals, many so called sleeping pills, that people claim knocks them out cold, actually has very little effect and only causes some drowsiness. If you told people they were for something completely different, then maybe people would have a completely different problem solved.

There is likely also a load of remedies in the TCM section that will work equally well.
