Q: What do you do in your spare time, here in China?
Well, to me it is a matter of choice. Somedays, if raining or too cold for my taste, I also surf the web or watch movies. But on sunny days, I do many other things, all outside the apartment.
There are many places of interest to visit within the city and nearby villages and towns. If you make a 3 hours driving one way circle around Nanning, by now I have probably visited most of the ones worth looking at. I do most of the time with GF and daughter, a few with a group of male friends. Quite enjoyable and allows me to learn more about China and its people.
Another way to kill time is to have a group of friends at honme for a meal. That has not really been too succesful, I have found, to my surprise, that many Chinese persons do not really enjoy Western food, and to eat it with fork and knive. It is not much fun to make a "paella" (seafood and rice dish from Spain), be almost 6 hours in preparations and actual cooking, just to be told it is "too salty" (and I had not put any salt in it).
And probably another common thing is to explore the many restaurants available within the city with my GF and her daughter. We do that at least once per week, and we all really have fun. Where else three persons can have a dinner, with me a cold beer, from $ 15 to $ 20 US dollars?
Several different things, surfing the web, reading books, going to the cinema, meeting up with other expats, trying out different restaurants, travelling ( everything from a day out to two or three weeks at a time), meeting up with some Chinese friends and about to take up photography once I get my new camera.
Mostly go out and see what new friends I can make over a cold bottle of beer.
Or just be lazy and sit around the apartment without pants.
Or both.
I drink cornucopious amounts of beer and spend too much time online.
If I am really motivated I may make it to the gym a few times a week.
I go to Hong Kong for the night whenever I can to escape the boredom in China and hang out with my gf.
surfing the web, walking ard aimlessly for the purpose of exercising, strolling ard the underground market where sometimes you don't expect to find stuff you've been looking for.
