Q: What do you like most and least about teaching in China?

Teaching is a convenient way for foreign expats to find work quickly in China. But as a job, what do you like most and least about your teaching position?

Off course they are the magnets that keep us all teaching here. Unless of course you work for an upscale private school filled with "Little Emperors" as I did for a year (never again). But what do you like least Sorel and why?

I like the enthusiasm of my students. I don't like the government's English curriculum.

CFTU.Admin:

I take it you work in a public school?  Most private Chinese schools want you develop your own lesson plans.  How would you improve the curriculum where you teach?

Dislike
 * The whole rote-learning thing, passing the exam over learning something. General apathy & helplessness, despite that the problem is well understood in education circles.

 * Low pay. In IT, students get 2x to 4x the income of their teacher despite being far less experienced, WTF. Does not help to attract brilliant people as teachers, got what you paid for...

Like

  * The few students who are actually learning something

The most: The students.

The least: Administration.

it's been pretty much this way everywhere. Students aren't all perfect, but I've found plenty who are inquisitive, motivated, and actually interested in critical thinking and learning (if given half a chance, more than they've gotten in traditional Chinese education).

The administration, however, is almost always filled with people who are lazy and incompetent, dishonest, xenophobic, and completely unwilling to listen to anyone they see as below them (especially to a "foreigner", despite having little to no idea how to run a school). This isn't just with language schools. Even state schools have people in charge, like principals, who have no educational background, but got in charge because of connections.

The culture of Chinese that blends in with the character of the students. korea was way over board when it came to teaching students realistically. Here I love the environment.

Least like: A husband of a Chinese wife isn't allowed to work and insure the safety of his family's future. So my BA degree keeps my family safe in China, not my marriage in China, how sick.

"I dislike the whole the wrong adoption of foreign teachers concept."

What the fuck does this mean??

ScotsAlan:

To be fair to Janosik, I think you quote him out of context. Yes his post is confused, probably a BCD. I don't think he is complaining about the ESL profession here in totallity, he is just having a go at the Mcteachers concept, and the Chinese market that demands them. It's the "hem of his garment" way of thinking that so many Chinese have. I know about this concept, because I have a daughter here. Everyone wants to touch her as if English will transport over by magic. For a professional educator, this must be very frustrating.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
