Yeah, it's a really great idea as long as there was a block user feature and a profanity filter.

Good idea, otherwise, bambino.

It would probably be abused by spambots in no time. What about a QQ group?

nicholasba:

very good idea! lets start one?

338161244 - unofficial eChinaCities group. Anyone can join without veryifying, coz I can't be online all the time to manage requests. Maybe it might need to be recreated in private form if spambots start to flood it. It seems I have to accept join requests anyway, so if I'm too lax at this, I'm willing to transfer group ownership to eChinaCities staff, or a more diligent groupkeeper.

I like the idea, i'm sure it'd be popular. I wonder how an open forum Chinese class would go down too.

Well, if it's a flop, I won't feel bad about the QQ group. Maybe I'll post a blog about it, so more people can join. It's a group of 3 at the moment. Nicholas seems to be more of a veteran, and webmaster to boot. I saw an option to transfer ownership, so I think that's best.

And a 4th was added, MinasBear. If a lot of people join, then there will be lots of fun conversations to be had. It turns out that ownership of the QQ group can't be transferred until I've known nicholas for at least 7 days. So either we wait it out, or nicholas could register a new group instead, which we all join again. It's up to you, really.

Thought about it once. Think I even suggested a chat room at some point. Don't remember. Believe it was pooh-poohed by the board. Oh well...

Frankly, and no offense intended to the board members - I'd rather chat with my mates down at Old Jacks, my favorite pub in QD, Sitting around a table, familiar faces rocking up throughout the night, chatting, and then moving on only to be replaced by other familiar faces. A guitar exchanging hands at the table. A sing-along. "More beer, Nancy! It's Alan's shout."  "Whoa! Check out those three hotties that just waltzed through the front door!" "Jackson! Whisky all around!"

That's a chat room.

coineineagh:

It sounds like you're comparing a night out with your mates at a bar, with an online chatroom. I've tried hanging aout with a bunch of local expats at a bar. They talked about pussy for 4 hours straight. It was entertaining for the first 30 minutes, going from Chinese co-workers to university cameltoe, but 4 hours of that is hardly intellectually stimulating. People don't go online for gratifying feedback while they're drinking. A chatroom is meant for people to exchange ideas & information, and get useful advice with problems. I'd think any content in a bar-room discussion will just spoil the atmosphere.

@coin: I've never participated in an online chatroom with strangers so perhaps I should try it sometime. But honestly, I don't have the time or patience to sit in front of my computer for hours on end sharing ideas, information, the world's problems and solutions to those problems. Forums are as far as I go. For stimulating conversation and other activity - live music, joke-telling, networking - I go to my neighborhood pub for genuine face-to-face conviviality. It's certainly not all about pussy, at least not amongst my mates and me. And you're right. Four hours in any pub (or chatroom, I would imagine) is excessive, My limit is probably two, maybe three if the vibe is right. I don't know. Perhaps you should try a different pub, a different night or time of day, and a different crowd next time you wish to commune with your cohorts.

Har!  Yes, Red, you are right.  I've been in that chat room.

What kind of chat room have they been discussing above?  I'm guessing it's some kind of computer thing.  Something that's not real.  Hmm..  Am I missing out on anything here?

Nah...don't think so.

Got the new, 4 disc, Fleetwood Mac set for Xmas and it's rockin on right now.  If you were here, I'd chat with you.

As it is, I'm sharing the music with my fellow dwellers above and below.  They haven't got a choice really.  It'll sure beat that Peking Opera drivel they usually listen to, that's for sure!

Red_Fox:

You been there, Royce. I'm sure we had a go or two at wailing The Irish Rover or Knockin' On Heaven's Door or Layla at some point... Good stuff, eh?

While I do like some members past and present, there are some here that I can't be bothered to exchange witty insults with. I think a chat group would just get ugly.

I'd say by far this is the best forum I've on used, we all have different ideas and opinions that lead to the right answer. Together we make a pretty health life style on here.

But adding a Chat room might run the risk of Visa cheating agents and that kind of stuff and lust for revenge chatting IF you didn't like the persons answer.

Shenzhen expat has a chat room, filled with laowai lovers looking to get emotionally abused and creepy old dudes. Im not sure why the forum here is so clean and usefull, but something about chat rooms turns people rude and creepy. Id imagine alot of the same if it happened on echinacities, but if the same regulars here spent some time on it, i think id enjoy it.

But no vicky, there would be no other topics, just her dumb questions about horrible laowai and everyone else calling her a dumb bitch.

if people want a chat room, then go to one.

the reason i like this forum is that you can PM people if you want.
