I don't understand why, US an Soviets haven't been there in 40 years. Even if they find Chang'e, she got to be pretty old by now.

A huge give face exercise. As far as I understand it the technology used has not been Chinese, what's new t here, and what is so great about copying America and Russia forty odd years after they did it. I would be far more impressed if China had put this money into updating their education system, or providing better pensions for the elderly. If they manage to put astronauts on Mars before anyone else using home grown technology then I will praise them but not for trying to play catch up nearly a half century late.

I'd like to see everyone get a free western toilet upgrade
Red_Fox:
Agree, Tom. It's all about bluster, boast and face. Not exactly a sign of a 21st-century superpower. Moon landings? Old hat.
Just today at lunch a Chinese mate complained to me about how great a money-waster the moon probe was. He's educated. But I guess for the vast majority of the population here, landing a contraption on the moon is something to be really proud - and nationalistic - about. My lunch companion wished the moon money had been spent on helping the poor rise out of poverty in his country. Altruism. A thin game in town.
Scandinavian:
Ted. I completely understand where you're coming from with the update of peoples thrones, but in this country 100 million people don't have access to refrigeration. There are so many other things you could spend money on instead of taking steps towards polluting other planets. I'd used the money on cleaning up the chimneys of the coal plants. Instant win for the entire country, and if there is anything on THIS planet that gives face, then it is clean air.
If they use the achievement the right way, then it's great.
The right way would be to use it as a way of inspiring kids to become engineers, to show that through hard work you can go far etc. Kind of like what the Yanks did/does. Of course here the lesson learned is that you can go far on stolen technology, but still, there must be room for inspiring millions of kids. (and by kids I mean boys, China has had one woman in space and I am sure they will leave it at that)
It's only because Mars is already red and the sun is too hot to land on during the day.
Waiting for the press release stating they found archeological evidence that Chinese were there 5.000 years ago, making the moon rightfully a territory of China.
Maybe make it a Special Economic Zone or something.
Scandinavian:
the air quality if better than in China, but after the first Chinese have walked there in flip flops, dragging their feet kicking up a lot of moon dust
TMaster:
At least they can honk all they want and never be heard.
Reminds me it's been a while since I didn't check on the latest Curiosity's HD 360° shots. Of mars.
It's also interesting to note that the USA can't afford the space missions anymore & do them in co-operation with Russia these days, simply because they are far too expensive! And the US GNP is over triple that of China...a sobering thought, just there..
Now, you have this govt. spending the people's money on old stuff, I'd hate to think how much. It would be an obscene amount, better spent (as others have said on this forum) on more necessary areas of life. And God there's plenty to improve here!!
But alas, as usual...not a peep from the populace... whether it be 'true' nationlalism (I doubt it) or simply a fear of violent reprisals (more likely) in any case, a very disappointing scenario.
DrMonkey:
The NASA & JPL are currently managing *several* missions orders of magnitude harder than what the Chinese Space Program just pulled out. They are way, way behind. Can't believe people can be this blind.
* The Curiosity robot on Mars. Landing such a big chunk on Mars is a first (thin atmosphere, not enough to be a good brake, enough to burn stuffs due to friction). The robot itself is plutonium powered, have lots of top notch instruments, 20 mn communication with Earth (vs 1 sec. with the Moon...), etc.
* Currently, the Dawn probe on its way to Ceres, after orbiting Vesta. Entirely propelled with a ion thruster. Navigation around asteroids with a ion thruster, that's some new tech.
* New Horizon on its way to Pluton and maybe other planets beyond, where no probes ever been.
* A probe orbiting Mercury. Putting anything in orbit of Mercury is super hard, due to the intense gravity well there. It's easier to leave the Solar System than putting something on orbit around Mercury.
NASA & ESA landed a probe on a moon of Saturn, Titan. It's a freak'in damn feat on one of the most mysterious and mythical planet of the Solar System. So, no, USA (and ESA) are not eating the dust, far from it ;)
Congrats to all the engineers and scientists who pulled that. Flawless landing, everything seems to work fine. The probe and the robots have some cool instruments that will teach us new stuffs about the Moon (especially that massive radar to inspect the underground).
From a tech point of view... Well, they can check the "soft Moon landing" box ^^ Mars landing is harder, hope they will take the challenge. The JPL & NASA landed the equivalent of a car there, so the bar is pretty high. Even harder, landing something on Europa, that moon of Jupiter with a (maybe) ocean under the ice surface, they would awe the world
Meanwhile, Curiosity on Mars, New Horizon on its way to Pluton, Dawn on its way to Ceres, an orbiter around Mercury and a couple more proves keeping doing cool stuffs... But sadly, much less media coverage :(
In october 1918 , the CSA - czechoslovak Airlines start operating with own, czech propeler planes, on the first route, soon they took into New York. It was not until 50's that China have civil aviation.
in 60's was people on the moon.
So okay, they are there, always delay, ... So, whats the deal ?
I just say, the poor freezing kids in rural area "schools"v sure salute to the moon rover ...
Congratulations China ! Excellent job.... welcome to a small, exclusive club !
* for the nay-sayers out there who seem to have some weird idea that one elevates oneself by diminishing another, I would just like to mention -

Chang'e? Isn't that the legend about the girl who got immortal life on the moon with her great love, but he was turned into a rabbit? Some love story, seems to me she got burnt. I bet she ate that rabbit.
Lots of Spaceballs out there.
Space isn't really my thing but wasn't moon landing stuff sorted out 40/45 years ago?
What they perhaps could be turning their energy towards would be putting a team into the World Cup. Even the 54th ranked team in the world, a country who doesn't give a stuff about soccer, is fielding a team.
The soccer World Cup will be on soon and China will be conspicuous by its absence.
This reality will be a massive loss of face situation for the Chinese people, especially its youth.
Goin to the moon...who gives a stuff!! What is China thinking about fer crissakes!
Moronic.
I just heard that the reason why CCTV isn't flooded with footage from the moon is that the operators don't dare use too much power on transmitting the images to earth, as they will need that energy for honking should they encounter one of the American cars up there.
diverdude1:
lol,,, ain't it the truth! well, at least they got First Place in the horn honking race !
I don't know why the Chinese want to explore space. In space no one can hear you honk.
Nessquick:
I guess, they will enjoy the spitting festival there, with no gravitation... just imagine ...
Astrophysicist NDT said that the first person to walk on Mars is probably a Chinese middle school student right now.
Scandinavian:
I think what Mr Tyson might have said is that since a 5th of the population is Chinese, then there is a statistical likelyhood that one of those will go first.
Also, maybe next year there will be a Survivor style TV show where the world population get to vote a person off the planet.
they want to know if the dragon will show up and eat it, or maybe hold a Moon Cake festival on the moon.
Am I the only one that thinks 'Jade Rabbit' sounds like a Chinese vibrator?
Scandinavian:
It sounds just as little as a vibrator as you nick-name does.
China is one more step closer to becoming Borg. I can see them sleeping at their stations now.
