Q: what do you think of the chinese millonaire chen guangbao treating hundreds of beggars in new york
I just read in the newspaper this article and it seems to me a way of hypocresy of this chinese. He also made s commitment of giving a big quantity of money to every beggar but in the end he didnt do it
I mean treating beggars to have a great dinner in a good restaurant in new york
The guy seems awfully clumsy, eager to be seen in a good light, and socially inept. He seems quite an admirer of Lei Feng and Red Guards too, maybe it's a generational thing. Maybe the people working for him just cash the money, let him to his shenanigans, and shut-up...

I think he really panders to LCD nationalism. For everyone that's a "loser" of modern china all they have is this nebulous sense of cultural superiority.
This guy buys domestic cars to replace japanese ones destroyed in a riot. I don't know for sure but I'd imagine he probably has a foreign car himself.

If he wanted to help, he could donate money to a shelter. This smiling douchebag is walking around with a bunch of cameras trying to give away money cause he wants attention. I think he probably wanted a big crowd of people all clamoring for his money like "oh now americans have to beg big chinaman for money"

Also notice the guy in the article picture is clearly not homeless!! Look at all the keys on his belt! That is someone who has places to go and things to do or he wouldn't have a bunch of keys for them!
Just for show. If he'd really wanted to help how about the hundreds of millions of Chinese living in poverty. Total douche.
So, from what I read above, billionaires shouldn't bother trying to help the poor and homeless, unless it's done quietly and anonymously.

(also, according to the interwebs, he's already helped out lots of his local people by some big donations... and if he tried this stunt in China, the media wouldn't make much of a fuss over it, because it would indicate that there's a huge homeless problem in China!)
As for why the money didn't materialise - apparently because he was advised that there would be quite a few who would have drug and alcohol dependence, and they'd only blow the cash on that. While it would hurt those who don't have that problem, I can see why the change of heart! (although, I'd see other solutions than just giving the money to organisations which may or may not have a slightly different idea of where the money ought to be spent! But then... $300, and expecting only 300-400 people... that's not a lot of money (to a billionaire) - so such a donation to a charity isn't a huge amount. (~$100.000)
Personally, I see it as a much better thing to do than when they have those big banquets where the latest rich and trendy celebrities go to give a pittance of the amount they spent on their wardrobe for the night just to have their photos taken for the local gossip magazines.
As for the Red Army motif... yeah, it sucks... but that's our perspective (and odd that it's his!) But, would that be any different to the Salvation army and their uniforms? He believes in something, and he's going to make it known. While I personally disagree with his apparent adoration of the Red Army, I still think he's allowed to have his admiration for them - and show it (and do a little propaganda into the bargain!).
Remember, he comes from a land where you've got to flaunt your money - what he's doing isn't really surprising - other than he's doing it!!! And he's getting lots of face for it!

It's not about needing to be quiet and anonymous. Tons of fundraisers are big affairs that get a lot of publicity.
It's about pushing the limits of good taste. There is a lot of room to work with between "quiet and anonymous" and "walking around with a bunch of cameras trying to shove money in people's faces" So don't act like it's an either/or proposition.
It says he did host a nice dinner, and that's a good thing to do.

If he TRULY cared, he wouldn't embarrass the homeless people by sticking cameras in their face while handing them over money or promising them money and then not giving it.
Just another fake piece of crap. Research shows that giving homeless money doesn't really help their situation. If he opened a school and taught them REAL viable skills or enrolled them in courses or something to motivate them... then I would be singing a different tune.

He's trying to get attention and to be seen in the good light, if he was a real philanthropist he would do it off camera, some billionaires do it and don't come to say on TV "I gave X amount of money to Y person/charity".
There is no such thing as philanthropy in China, that makes me laugh because most of every Chinese would never give any money to a charity, but they like to ask foreigners to give money whenever they can and if you don't give they will flag you as a bad person, also you never know what becomes of this money. My ex employers asked the foreigners working in the HR and Sales departments to give for charity, when we asked what charity they were unable to give us a name and even less any way to contact the organization. I am sure that this money ended up in official's pockets and was used by the company as bribes.
Somehow, I just got reminded of the Truman Doctrine and the Fair Deal in Eastern Europe during the 1950's.... extremely public! Lots of money being thrown about to encourage people to come to 'our' side, we are the good guys, etc etc ...
Obviously, many dis-similarities... and yet....
