Q: What do you think of the flute guy?
You know who i'm talking about, he lives upstairs, or maybe in the next building, and he plays the Chinese flute, maybe sometimes in the park, and every time you hear him he's playing something wistful and melancholic, like Cane from 'Kung Fu' might've played whilst walking through the desert, or otherwise he's playing something with a spritely feel, like any minute Tinkerbell is going to land on his shoulder and Peter Pan is going to dance out of the shadows and join in the tune. But always those same two basic themes. I know of course what you thought the first time you heard him; you thought, 'Wow, this is the real China. Such ancient grace in his tuneful harmonies.' But how does it sound to you after you've been here a year? Or three? Or five? Because i've been here eight.........and it's beginning to sound boring. I mean, don't get me wrong, i'd rather he was there than not there. It's nice. A bit of music with your supper. But learn some new tunes, because I play the sax and I know, all that guy's doing is rolling around inside the pentatonic scale. Anything sounds good, it's like the blues scale, you can't go wrong; you just waffle around in circles and it comes out sounding cool. But what about getting him turned on to some Jethro Tull? Or a bit of Acid Jazz? I mean 5000 years on that same tune; mix it up a little! When I play I switch from Henry Rollins to Sonny Rollins, The Rolling Stones to The Stone Roses, Guns and Roses, Ella Fitzgerald, Macy Gray, Maceo Parker, Charlie Parker, and on and on and on, and the only thing Peter Pan is doing while i'm playing is chugging a beer or giving old Tink a right proper seeing to................and God only knows what the flute guy must make of it.
So my question to you is this: If you could inject into his home (meaning the home of the most traditional Chinese person around) the music of your choice; what would that choice be?
Breaking Benjamin - This Town
or
Barry McGuire - Eve of Destruction
Either would be better than "ancient grass being blown by the farts of bloated peasants", to paraphrase the Chinese title.
