Q: what does average person think of westerner

I did not see any posts about this. truely wondering. I know some think westerners are all rich. Some think we look good. Some seem not pleased with us, as per posts. I met some of my GF men friends who obviously did not like meeting me. But over all how are westerners viewed.
Do we generally have a positive image?
edit: I can't say I was treated like a rock star.

I think this topic has been discussed. They think western men are Rock Star.  That's a joke. It comes down to that they don't like you because you make more money than those GF men friends. cheeky

That's a really tough call, since the only people who bother westerners, and the only Chinese people who go on forums like this, are ones that have strong feelings about westerners, either positive or negative.

When I walk down the street, and five Chinese people bother me - either because they hate foreigners, or are obsessed with foreign culture - it is easy to generalize Chinese based on those folks. But what about the 500 people who didn't bother me? Who are those magical wonderful people and why aren't they annoying? It's a secret to everybody.

I think you'll have to take age into consideration for this one, as well as where a person lives. There is no "average" for the whole of China. Young people who live in the city generally seem to like foreigners and want to talk to them. They like Western pop culture and want to learn English. However, older people can be a mixed bag. Some of them may like foreigners, some may hate them. I figure most don't care except for the few seconds they see one walking past them.

I find that we are just a couriosity or they don't really care too much for the most part.  It is true that young people in big cities are more likley to be friendly, but I find it is usally the young women that are into western culture, want to learn English and like foreigners the most.
But I find most men here do not like you when you date a local girl.

As a whole I don't think GUYS have a very good image. The Chinese I met have been more curious and reserved toward foreign girls, but the guys definitely arrive in China with a stigma they have to work to shake off.

It's not really surprising though. All it takes is one white guy sleeping around or drinking in the street and being loud for people to assume all others are like him.

BaoanGuy:

yeah they get a bad rap. I mean I've heard of white guys getting stopped at night and asked to produce their pass port or else be arrested. Or they'll be blamed for nearly anything bad that happens. For me I've never had a problem.

They think : 'oh, laowai!' Look up and down at you and start judging : too tall, too short, too skinny, too fat, big nose, blond hair, talking to loud and moving too fast... overall, they think we're not chinese so we can't be too good anyway...

Localla:

The title is about "average Chinese"....whom are Chinese they don't speak English, they don't pay a dime attention to foreign country and ppl at all.......No one have time to judge you at all...except Chinese like me....You haven't known enough how i judge you yet....!~~

1. Socially / financially we're considered 2nd class citizens.
2. We're China's model minority group.
