After watching the gruesome video of the Shandong mother being beaten to death as McDonald staff and patrons just watched on, I recall the young Chinese girl who was hit by a car and allowed to lay bleeding in the street for 20 minutes before someone even called 110. This all makes me realize how cold and selfish Chinese people have become with their new wealth. Or do you think they were always this selfish?
Has nothing to do with being cold and selfish.
Has everything to do with the high probability of being put to death for a crime you didn't commit. That's why you don't help people because if you do, then there will be somebody who will tell the police they saw you right next to the victim at the time of the crime and they didn't see anybody else so they'll just assume it was you. Next thing you know, you could be facing a death sentence without a fair trial.
In a country like China you don't ever want to find yourself on the wrong side of the law.
I guess you haven't been in China very long, but if you do stay long, hopefully you'll learn to not get involved in things like that or you'll be facing deportation at best and the death penalty at worst.
Yes, I understand that in the USA or Europe or Australia or pretty much anywhere else you always stop to help people without fear of being punished for it.. But this is China and getting punished for trying to help happens far more than it should.
Sid is right. There is no rule of law in China. People are constantly put to death based on zero evidence. The police will intimidate and even beat innocent bystanders to make them say they saw "X" do something.
Sid and Englteachted are correct. The Chinese laws are shit but some cities are putting the "Good Samaritan Law" in to effect. Is it being enforced? Who knows...
But personally, I also think there is something deeply wrong with Chinese society and the mind of the mainlanders. I wouldn't use that totally as a cop-out and give them a free pass just because of the law. I think they were beaten into submission time and time again and it broke part of their spirit.
So now they are taught to look out for themselves and their family and pay no mind to others. The thing that keeps them in this state is FACE. They can't admit they are moving the wrong direction... because that would be admitting fault.
ANOTHER thing is the while the government PRETENDS to support Chinese helping each other... they ACTUALLY prefer they do not. Why?
Most of the people screwing with the common people are officials, rich people or gangs. They know if the people united, they would be screwed. They want them to be separate so China can continue to be their own little playground.
This would never have happened in a "Kungfu", at least here in town they have far to few customers to start a fight
People are afraid of being sued for doing the right thing. In China there is no Good Samaritan law to protect those who do help. it is a shame when people out of fear refuse to help .
I had a friend in another area was sued for stopping and helping a person who was struck by a car. even though they were not guilty they were charged.
Personally I would still do the right thing and go down fighting for truth and human dignity
Sadly it proves there are murderous psychopaths all over the world.
I dont think it has anything to do with laws or culture. Have you ever been to a mcdonalds here in China? Have you ever seen a person capable of stoping a crazed cult member from beating someone to death? They would have got beaten to death themselves. Chinese are cowards , thats a fact. But what could a 18 year old burger flipper do besides call the cops?
This is going to sound harsh but you guys sound as dumb as the chinese who get rowled up everytime a foreigner gets a parking ticket. Its the same shit. Id love to see what you guys would do if a crazed nut bad was killing someone in front of you screaming devil worship.
Not every story is a judgement of chinese values. its a story. Every day literally thousands of people get hit by cars in China , and get picked up by strangers and taken for help. But thats not freaking news. Thats life. One story about a kid from years ago and you still cling to it.
Dont you have CNN? seems every day theres a new shooting in the states and lots of videos of people running for their damn lives. You dont often see superheros running towards them. Nope they call the damn cops and get the hell out of dodge.
True story .one friday when i was 16 or so me and 4 friends smoked a few joints and were driving around. we saw this field with like 25 high schoolers 17-19 drinking. Any one of them could have killed all 4 of us. But we were high and thoight it would be hilarious to scare the shit out of them. So we parked. Took off every stich of clothing . and ran at them screaming " were gonna kill you!" They saw these naked guys coming to kill them and not a single tough guy in the bunch. They ran like the wind and called the cops and we got arrested.
The moral: almost no one is a tough guy if you crazy enough and that dude was insane.
Lastly, im on my phone so i cant google it , but search out the knife attacks at a university from a few years ago. You see awsome footage of a chinese hero karate kicking a dude with a machete in the face.

Hey mike, heard a bad news of cops killing in Canada....?
Robk:
LoL... what the hell?
Are you sure they are JUST joints? Sounds like you were tripping on acid, haha.
People all over the world will stand around looking instead of helping. It's called the "Bystander Effect."
But only in China will this happen in 99.99% of cases.
A dog was beaten to death in beijing for not carrying proper documentation

Good to see someone had a go in the States today, and prevented another campus mass shooting.
I'd have to agree with those who said that people are conditioned to stay out of these situations because of Chinese logic. When some bully brought his parents to my door to extort money from me, the police didn't even listen to me. They told me I must owe him money because even his elderly parents came. The police! With logic like that, it's no wonder people just want to avoid any trouble.
I would not intervene, not because I am a coward but because in China each time something negative involving a foreigner is happening it's always the foreigner's fault even when it's obviously not, and the court never side with the foreigner, I don't want the local "justice" to sentence me to death for a crime I did not commit.
In a country where the law protect Good Samaritans I would intervene, maybe draw the attention of the 2 or 3 strongest looking attackers to me then go on the other side of the restaurant or outside, thus holding them far from the victim, with some luck she could get herself out of it or stay alive until the cops' arrival.
But in China I would just keep eating my burger and walk out as if nothing happened.

In a democratic country it would, not in a country where your punishment is already decided before the trial begins because the guy you punched in order to defend someone else is the judge's buddy, where the cops beats you and intimidates you in order to make you sign fake confessions claiming that you killed the other guy's victim, and if you refuse to play their game you will simply "disappear" or be send in a "reeducation through work camp" aka labor camp or gulag somewhere in the Gobi desert and never be seen again. And of course your embassy will be powerless to help you, it doesn't matter whether you are American or from some economically insignificant third world country.
But yeah, back in a democratic country with a fair justice that would make you a coward.

Fear doesn't make you a coward! Allowing the fear to control you does. That is a very significant difference. If anyone doesn't feel fear when facing a potentially dangerous situation, that person is crazy. But if he allows that fear to cause him to turn his back on his fellow man, then yes, he is a coward.

In a democratic country in the state of Louisiana, the police are exactly the same! There are many suits against Louisiana police abusing citizens. These are mostly city police or parish deputies. And the judges are just as crooked, siding with the cops in many cases.
But I must say Louisiana State troopers have proved themselves many times to be "The Good Samaritan."
