Q: What examples do you have of double standards?
On June 3 at 14:40, two foreigners were spotted riding two black three-wheeled motorcycles on a Shanxi expressway between Huangzhai Village and Yangqu Town. A third foreigner was sitting in the backseat of one of the motorcycles holding a card that read “Shanxi Provincial Expressway Transit Card”.
It was later discovered that the two bikes were without license plates, and the three foreigners, who were from France and Italy, were without drivers’ licences. They had originally set off from Beijing and had entered Shanxi from the tollgate at Sunqi Village, and were heading in the direction of Luliang for a holiday.
After getting in touch with the transport authorities, the reporter who spotted the foreigners was told that three-wheeled motorcycles weren’t allowed to go on the expressway, though explained that they must have obtained the transit card when they passed through the tollgate at Sunqi. Despite authorities’ assumptions however, they were unable to find any record of where and when they obtained the card.
Now if this was a local nobody would have batted an eye
My favorite is: if I must give someone money for a festival or other occasion, it is a tradition that must be respected. If I am supposed to receive money for a festival or other occasion, it is outdated or not applicable to foreigners.
Any story about China or the CCP will contain at least one example of double standards.
My wife routinely tells me not to stare at people. Need I say more?

I coughed once and racked up what I am pretty sure was part of my lung. I had to either swallow it or, as I did, went to a nearby tree and spat at the foot of it. The missus asks 'was that necessary?'. I point to a guy cleaning out his nostrils not fifteen feet away 'yes, is that?'.

The staff at my College telling me not to smoke in the classroom (even though I have never done that) and not to smoke around students as it would be a bad example. I explained I never smoke in the buildings, but Chinese teachers do and I pointed at the office across from hers and a teacher was smoking! 'Well what about them?', 'Oh, but you need to be a better example', 'huh?'
Or the staff telling us two foreign teachers not to be late to class as it causes a 'teaching accident', then two days later the very woman who told us not to be late was in the lift with the other foreign teacher and the bell went, he turned to her and said does this constitute a 'teaching accident?'
My top three:
1- Guilin 2007. I notice the other teachers on my floor let students out ten minutes before lunch. I let mine 5 minutes before lunch. Forced to make up the ENTIRE class on a saturday.
2- Guilin 2007- 2011: Summertime. People are outside having beer and BBQ. The men have taken off their shirts, rolled up their pants and are smoking while eating. I unbutton my shirt (but leave it on) and got scolded by my friends (and GF) for doing that. Pointing to the other offenders made no difference.
3- Beijing 2012. Three male teachers are smoking in the mens room. One of them offers me a cigarette. I take it. I got scolded for "breaking the rules". I point to the other offenders and am told "Stop making trouble".
