Whenever my friends and I get together, the one topic that always gets asked regardless of what we have been doing lately in our lives is what foods we miss the most from home, the answers are usually the same and we always hate ourselves when we get done. When a friend comes back from our home country we always hound them about what they ate and how was it and to use as many adjectives as possible. the food that i miss the most is a toss up between Taco bell tacos and peach cobbler (im a Tennessee boy in changsha, no tacos here)

Where to begin??
I lived long time near Mexico,,, so, any of that beyond delicious Mexican Food, which I consider to be the best food in the world.
cheese enchiladas
pico de gallo
chili con queso
best tortillas in the world
Non-Mex would be-
Black-eyed Peas
Cornbread
Shrimp Gumbo
Fried Catfish
Chicken-fried Steak
Pinto Beans
a first-rate Lasagna w/ Garlic Bread
darn I'm hungry !
matsharr:
im guessing your from my neck of the woods from the food you miss
diverdude1:
yeah, probably so. Louisiana & Texas Gulf Coast ....
Ive lived a lotta places and been to a few more,,,, Gulf Coast has the Best food in the World !
how about some good ol' fashioned macaroni and cheese.....
or come sweet potatoes (from a pot, not a radioactive barrel)
ribs!!!!!
red velvet cake
Well i'm from England, so we don't have much food that's not imported. We've got Chinese, Indian, French, Italian, pretty much everything, but British food? Fish and chips are ok, Cornish pasties are nice, fudge is great, Sunday roasts are real good; can't think of much else. Ain't never tried haggis and don't think I ever will, and steak and kidney pie might sound good to me if there were no kidney in it. I think I miss decent cake most. And crack.
Traditional bread, sliced and served with the fresh butter, and white cheese ...
(I just flooded keyboard with saliva...)
Reading all your responses above made me really hungry!
1. A freaking sandwich with a load of cheese and cold cut meat!
2. Anything from Texas Roadhouse
3. Delicious plate of cheese fries with a side of ranch
4. Mexican food especially enchiladas and burritos
5. Speaking of burritos, being from Iowa I really miss Panchero's!
6. Haven't tried much pizza here yet because Chinese friends do not like, so being home with friends who want to go out and eat pizza, or get a pie delivered.
7. Cinnamon Roll with real white frosting on top and real cinnamon, not some powdery sh** they use here.
8. The coffee is amazing here, but there are times I miss my hometown favorite Java House.
I'm making myself depressed right now, I'm done....
I'm Australian and I miss all the usual things. Had vegemite the first time for more than a year the other day, which made me very happy.
A great barbecue is probably top of the list, particularly if dad's in charge of the tongs, with one of mum's roasts coming a close second.
Top quality fresh seafood is also something I craved. I know China has seafood but I found it all crap - even their best was not a patch on even the worst stuff the worst Aussie fishmongers sell.
One thing I miss a lot is not even from my country. I used to live in Scotland, and the big Scottish fry up (like the English one but with more meat and more chance of an immanent heart attack) is something I genuinely miss. There's plenty of places where I live now that can do a decent English breakfast, but no place that will even attempt the Scottish variety.
Anything from Denny's, Taco bell, Shoney's breakfast and real pizza.
I missed meat. One of the last things I ordered was Peking Duck because I wanted a nice piece of breast meat, it looked wonderful even with the head, but when I picked up the first piece and found no meat, only skin I just started to laugh. I'm home, BBQ steak, thick juicey and tender, roast beef,,,.mmmmm and hamburgers, I'd just as soon have a good hamburger as a steak. I sometimes make them with blue cheese, bacon and onions in them on a nice bun and I don't add anything else.
There are just so many things in China that I couldn't get cheese, spices but no oven, prepared things like tomato paste. I did find pizza from Sharons in Guilin was good, but only a 9''. I always wanted to order 3 of them, but didn't.
Marmite
Hugh.G.Rection:
I got a nice large jar of marmite! Check out British Corner Shops (google it, I'm not going to spam this site), they've got all sorts of nice British stuff, and not too expensive. I also got some Cadbury's Fruit and Nut, (that's long since gone though).
lokethebloke:
You are the kindest and most thoughtful person on this site, I will leave you a jar in my will.
well i am from UK and missing my Brit girls all the time.....jucy......24 hours ready for .......action
I'm from Ukraine and I really miss our national dishes like borshch, varenyky and everything that my mom cooks.. I also lived in Malta for 3 months, and they have a lot of delicious food - a mix of English, Italian and Maltese food. I miss their pasta and pizza... Want to go back there... Sometimes I try to cook our national dishes, but the taste is different, it's not that good( And yeah... an oven - I miss it too... I want to make an apple pie or a cake..
Shining_brow:
You can buy ovens here.. small ones, about the same size as a microwave, and also sites on your kitchen bench. I cook up roast chicken and vegies fairly regularly! I think I paid about 450RMB for it.
Depending on your city, you might be able to get it at one of the big 'western' type supermarkets, or you may have to get one off Taobao.
nat_zelinska:
Yeah, probably one day I will just buy one of those small ovens)
:
I found in Tesco borsch too. You can try to buy that one. Of course it won't taste like the one from your home country.
Branston Pickle, my family and friends, decent French bread. That's about it. Not in order though, I mean, I really really miss decent French bread.
Roopram Roti, Teloh, Saoto, Baka Bana, Bara, Loempia, Dawet, bruine bonen kip, Lian Fa Tjauw Min & Tjiauw Fan and last but not least, my mom's cooking...
Cheese...and I mean real cheese not the processed sliced Milkana crap you find in most stores.
Edam gouda cheddar mozzarella brie...oh how I miss the cheese!
ambivalentmace:
in some cities now they have an "ole" import food store in the inzone malls that carry the cheese, i can now get edom, provolone, gouda and my favorite pepper jack here for about a year now in jinan.
Shining_brow:
DUDE!!! Taobao is littered with the stuff... edam, gouda, swiss, emmental. IIRC, 4.5kg of Edam (real, imported from Holland) is about 200RMB, or 1kg ball for about 80...
thedude:
In 2 years I have yet to try Taobao...I will give it a shot...do they take Mastercard?
I do find real cheese sometimes at RT Mart but they are often sold out and its only Cheddar (American).
Shining_brow:
TBH, I haven't tried using Mastercard, so I can't answer. I've been using my Chinese bank account.
I miss totally unhealthy breakfasts at Cracker Barrel, Waffle House, Hardee's etc. I often wonder how well (or poorly) a Cracker Barrel or Waffle House would do in China. The fat man living inside me could possibly sustain a single franchise alone
CHEESE, butter, real BLTs, salads with mayonnaise, nice coffee, clam chowder, whipped cream & fresh safe healthy milk. Cakes here suck, a good chocolate cake would be nice as well as a slice of apple pie.
Shining_brow:
Ok, I need to comment...
Same as above - good cheese you can get in the 'western' supermarkets, or Taobao. Butter you should be able to get at Lianhua or CenturyMart (the larger stores, anyway... even had Irish made butter!!)
Salads? Make them yourself - same with the mayonnaise (which is a much better alternative to what you get from jars!
Coffee ... TBH, I haven't tried any of the 'good' coffees here.... could be pot luck. But, I suspect, given the other stuff you can get, it shouldn't be too bad
Milk and cakes I'll agree with :)
As for your apple pie... buy and oven and make it yourself! :D)
Some really good traditional Aussie Chinese food... lemon chicken!! Salt and pepper chicken... and a good special fried rice
Ok, how about... a hamburger with beetroot and pineapple!!!
Real good deli bacon... (not the packet stuff)
A good milkshake, and a real meat-pie!
Most other stuff I'm ok with, cos I can cook my steak most times I want to.
French bread, baked beans, cheese and pickle sandwiches, sausages, lasagne, marmite, cheese, cheese, cheese.
I'm depressed now.
teggsnose:
By the way, baked beans ( Heinz ) are available online here...
Rin:
Yeah, I did find some on taobao but it's a bit of a pain setting up a taobao account. I can't read Chinese very well.
I miss good bread. We Germans make exceptionally good sour dough bread and rye bread. It's full of fibre and just super satisfying when you eat it with a cold cut and cheese. I also miss good old Bratwurst of course, Rotkraut (red cabbage), Knoedel and roast beef. I also miss the sweet things like cake, torte and good ice cream in the summer. I don't miss saurkraut though, because unlike the widely held myth, not all Germans like saurkraut!
sorrel:
I am not German, but I agree with you 100%. I miss the variety and deliciousness of German baking.
