Q: What food from your home country do you miss most here?

You can get a lot of things especially in the big cities..but it is often not quite right! I always miss bagels (NYC area, can't make the same elsewhere) and mac and cheese Smile

Bagels can be made anywhere, actually it's very easy..
Trick #1 need the right water ( a lot of water) to make a dough and them boil them not steam (as everybody looks for shortcuts) mountain water bottle will do.(need a lot of bottles)
Trick #2 a right oven if don't have one handy, put the ice cubes in the oven at the very start. So the outside don't get too crispy too fast while inside is still raw.

I don't miss anything, maybe teawurst and the snails, European snails are the best, sauteed in the buttery garlic  sauce with the splash of lemon plus artichoke hearts on the side. and fresh baquette . yummy.

luojiao:

Yummy!

Too bad I don't have an oven! Maybe I'll try your tricks when I go home

Real French bread! You can buy a loaf, take it home and tear it apart piece by piece. Butter optional. Garlic and oil might hit the spot. MmmmMmMMmMmm ...

Decent back bacon (smoked or un-smoked) though recently one place in Guangzhou has been stocking it. I'd even tried imported Canadian & American bacon once or twice but it was barely better than standard Chinese bacon.

I agree with the "fresh bread" and a variety of it............  but also a good piece of a cow...prime rib in particular.....but any old roast (rump!! roast) or a good beef steak. The seafood is great but we all know.....variety is "the spice of life", and the longer I stay, the more Chinese food becomes just that ...Chinese food....same old same old stuff.

sorrel:

i could add
the smell of bread fresh from the oven when you walk into a bakery, knowing that if you bring it home, you can cut it open and watch the butter melt slowly.

The crusts from a French bread stick that crunch when you bite into it.

Artisan bread with sunflower or sesame seeds on the top, giving it an extra special flavour.

baking your own brown bread and eating it with honey

i could go on.......enlightened

breakfast menu

ham and eggs, steak and eggs, sausage and eggs, bacon and eggs ...toast and hash brown.... had enough eggs..boiled (soft, medium hard) fried (over easy, basted, sunny side up....poached, ... scrambled egg .... omelet (with whatever you want (spanish is my fav.(spicy)

french toast  and your own variety of toppings

pancakes ...variety of toppings and fillings

waffles ....  god I'd love a good peach waffle right now  ...Osoyoos BC peach would be nice.

the fruit stuff can be done here for breakfast.... but getting the right bread/toast and a decent juice or milk or coffee ................  well  better luck next time...

stay tuned for lunch and dinner
