Q: What form and level of health insurance are Chinese schools required to provide to foreign teachers?
I see many teaching contracts for foreign teachers offering health insurance only for accidents are for low maximum benefits such as 800 rmb per year. Aren't schools licensed to hire foreign teachers required to provide REAL health insurance? What are the legal requirements?

This varies from one province to another.
Yes, there is a national standard..but this is China and how that translates locally is another story.
Health insurance to cover accidents is the minimum requirement. (All companies in China are required to provide this to its employees)

The contract says the maximum health insurance is 800 rmb per year. Does that satisfy the government requirements?
No, schools are not obligated to provide you with health insurance. Only government benefits will get you health insurance IF your school is signed up for it, it is mandatory, but not a lot of schools signed up for it because lets say your salary is 12,000 you'll be deducted 1500 rmb or less monthly for Health, pension and other benefits given to you by the government, NOT the school. . A lot of school fear this will push teachers out the door, because most teacher don't want these benefits, they rather get the money instead. So most schools don't obey this law.
