Q: What is a free download android app to study Chinese for someone who lives in China?

I have just bought my first Android phone, a Samsung Galaxy S.  I live and work in a 2nd tier city in Guangdong, so I'm wondering if the problems I have been experiencing are due to the fact that I am accessing American websites while in China and using Market to download apps.

Anyway, I know there are lots of android apps that you can download for free to study and translate Chinese to English and vice versa, but my problem seems to be finding one that actually works. Last night I downloaded "Learn Chinese Mandarin Phrases" by Codegent from www.appbrain.com - but once it had finished downloading, I tried to install it, and it didn't work.  I can't remember the reason given, and right now I can't find the download file on my phone to try it again.

So if anyone has a similar phone and they have used it to download a decent English-Chinese/Chinese-English translator dictionary that features Pinyin, simplified Chinese and English look-up function as well as something to teach me how to write Chinese characters then please tell me how and where to get it.  It would be really useful to me if you told me where you were when you downloaded your app (i.e. Hong Kong, mainland China or elsewhere).

google pinyin for sure. also hanping dictionary is quite good.

...and if no one cares I shall proceed. Chinese Vocab Builder is another one worth installing. wink
CueBrain is good too (www.aephid.com) It's an Android app for learning all sorts of languages, including Chinese and has pinyin support with speech.cheeky
I suggest you root it. Rooting will enable you to install app's not from the Android Market. enlightened
But for sure a other retard will know better.... smiley

Hi!

I am using LingLing Learn Chinese for almost a month and I must say that it is the best way to learn this language. It's fun, easy i and super effective. I am learning 30 new words each day. You can download it for free from Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hepilabs.lingling.chinese&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5oZXBpbGFicy5saW5nbGluZy5jaGluZXNlIl0.
