Q: What games do you play in your classes?

Looking for some new games for my classes.

I often play:

- What time is is Mr. Wolf?

- Modified version of Beer Pong. Cups with water and a ping pong ball.

- Giving advice to a stranger.

- Random reading games.

What games do you guys play? Thanks.

From the sound of 'What time is it Mr Wolf?' i'm guessing you teach kids. Well if you have any flashcards (a 'must' I find) there are loads of games: Just drill the vocab a little then hand them one each and threaten to hit them with a hammer unless they say someone else's card first. They love this; though it's probably advisable to use an inflatable hammer. (EF will never have 'me' back, that's for sure).

I also use an egg-timer a fair bit. Set up a pattern of dialogue you want them to practise then start the timer. Whoever's speaking when it goes off gets punched in the face (though the forefit is best decided by the teacher themself).

Peter Watcyn-Jones has got loads of good books but they're mostly adult material. (Porn and stuff, fnarr). But you can get them sent to you from Taobao for about 10 yuan each, then you just go and print them out. Excellent stuff.

MissA:

Yep. Kids + egg/sand timer = win.

I used to have a weird multi-coloured, multi-valve contraption that would quite literally shut the kids up for 15 minutes while they stared at it. Not really the point of English class, sure, but it worked a treat for calming down hyperactive kids.

Different ages? Different games.

Sentence game: Write 5 sentences on the board, number them 1 - 5. No. 6 is the monster. They will do everything with the die to make it land on 6 so you can grab them and eat them! Kids age = 5 - 7

Sentence game: Same as above but throw a 6 they have to change seats. Mark one chair with a cross. No-one is allowed to sit there.

Sentence game: make some action cards such as - Stand on one leg for 15 seconds, Do 5 push ups, Dance with the teacher. Sing a song. I do about 5 actions and if the student throws a 6 they select an action card.

Spelling game: Divide the class into however many teams you need. About 5 or 6 to a team maximum. Divide the board into 2 columns, 1 side for each team. Hand the first student in each team a marker. Yell out one of the words they have been learning and then it's a spelling relay. Each student runs to the board, writes a letter, races back to the line passing the marker, next student writes the next letter and so on. Not only great action for the kids but hilarious when you point out errors and weird looking letters written in a hurry!

Games are only limited by your imagination. Some more sophisticated games you can play with the older students. In another answer to a similar question I described my magnetic letters game. I play 2 to 3 games per lesson if it's a 2 hour class. But I also with hold games if the class misbehaves.

I have just downloaded Scrabble and played that last week with the kids. The best they can do is 3 letter words with an occasional 4. Wifi mouse, projector and screen and classroom computer required.

Enjoy!

MissA:

The relay game also works with the alphabet.

I was amazed, coming to China, at the amount of kids who, if you sing the letter a, will parrot the whole alphabet song back at you but who, when not singing, have absolutely no idea what order the letters are meant to go in. A few times on the losing side in a board race, and they pick it up quick smart.

My best for younger kids; musical statues.

Put the song of the week/day on and get them to do whatever action you choose until you (or TA) stop the music. Kids freeze and must hold their position (while you tickle and make faces at them) until you hold up a flashcard; they can only move after they shout the flashcard item. If they move during the freeze time - something you, obviously, will do your level best to make them do - then they get hit on the head with an inflatable plastic hammer. Works every time.

Great for vocab review.

For older kids (or adults) the game called by a few names, but most often 'Hot Seat' or 'Backs to the Board', is an absolute godsend. It can descent into pandemonium if you're not strict, though, because the kids get SO competitive and over excited.

If you're teaching older or higher level classes, then everyone loves a good running dictation; make it competitive and with one photocopy of the reading and one stick of blu-tak you're set. I did that with my adults today, bribing them with the promise of chocolate to the winners and they went mental - the runners were all huffing and puffing after five minutes.

Play 20 questions with a class that can speak and is well-behaved. It's quite fun! Played that last week after reviewing how to play the game.

What you do is make up some topics and put them on a piece of paper. you can take one sheet of paper fold it into six different sections and cut them out evenly. If you did this correctly you would have ended up with 6 rectangles.

Topics: Foods, Animals, Countries, T.V. Shows, Books, Jobs

You can make a list of your own. You can make anything from Cartoons as a topic to something more difficult Actors/Actresses.

Let one volunteer pick the card which shouldn't be shown. Whatever the kid gets he has to think of a word related to that topic. If he were to draw countries he could pick Argentina for example. Allow the student to give up to three hints if he likes. You also have to let the class know what the topic is. THe student can then give his three hints which could be a country located in South America. The people in this country can play soccer and basketball very well. This countries flag has a sun on it.

After the hints are given or not the students can guess and the question master has the right to choose who gives the answers. If nobody can guess what the answer is the question master can get points. If the person that picks the right answer he can get points. You can use some type of point system in this game if you want. But it's not necessary!

Thanks, gents!!

Giving advice to a stranger is a great adult game that can easily kill half an hour. Give everyone paper and a pen. Have everyone write 1 problem. Have everyone crumble their paper and put it in a cup. Each student will choose 1 problem and give the 'stranger' advice. Excellent speaking activity.
