Probably a 'red envelope' - it seems to be the appropriate / expected gift for many occasions
Depending on how close you are to them but a pendant with the Chinese animal of the year of birth is tasteful.
TedDBayer:
Give the real thing, nothing like a bunch of snakes or monkeys running around to liven things up.
hong bao seems to be the way to go.
as an expat I reserve the right to give what is customary in my own culture, despite it being strange to the people here
Baby sling or carrier. It freaks me out when I see people riding on scooters or motorcycles and the woman is just holding the baby.
Probably some baby diapers or some baby food..
TedDBayer:
They have diapers in China? I know they have tainted baby formula.
BTW, the doctor ordered you to cut down on your meds.
