Q: What to give as gift to parents of a newborn?

Seems kids are dumping out of the vaginas of all my wifes friends these days. Need to prepare.

I know hongbao is common practice, can I get away with a teddy bear ? (naturally one that passes safety inspections

I bought my Chinese friends one of those inflatable baby swimming pools that are all the rage here. The new born wears this floating device around the head and dangles around in it. They all seem to love the thing and its "suppose" to be good for the baby.

Taobao. It was much cheaper. Like 200. In the store it was 600.

did you get any feedback as to if it deflated on first use etc. Sounds like a good alternative to a little red envelope.

I bought it maybe five months ago. Went to see the family last week and they were still using it. Note, the inflatable head rest for the baby was sold separately!

When the baby hangs himself in the water, the parents will sue you.

baiju and cigarettes

i would go with the good old hong bao. Toys are mostly not useful at that age

Scandinavian:

from age 3-6 months a baby is able to form a relationship with a stuffed toy animal and in that find safety and comfort when lying in bed alone.

I agree the little ones don't really need anything. They certainly don't need cash, which is why I ask.

Scandinavian:

a teddy bear needs to be unpacked, and properly ventilated prior to be given to a baby, so at birth it is useless, but shortly after it becomes relevant.

Had an epiphany last night. All our Chinese friends who will become parents in the near future will get a hongbao, maybe even with the added comment of saying "It's such a nice gesture this hongbao thing" to make sure that when our time comes, we get cash instead of intolerable plastic crap. Yes, I happened to walk past the shops near a baby factory (aka hospital) yesterday. The amount of garbage people can buy there is unfathomable.
