For Christmas I want to travel to small traditional village or town in China, with not too many tourists.
Someone told me about a place called Tongli, next to Shanghai.
Anyone know if it is nice, or if there are other nice places?

Kaili in Guizhou provence. It's small and a good base to set out and explore the local minority villages in the area. Miao and Dong are the major groups. There are markets and very few foreign tourists make it there. Rice teraces and wooden houses. It's a wonderful place to be. Though Spring festival might be a better time to go. They celebrate there festivals then too.
Happy travels.
Tongli is a nice place, but like many chinese tourist spots it has been revamped and cannot be considered an authentic place. We visited a few of those villages in 2005 and the one (at the time) that looked the more genuine was Xitang.
