Q: what grocery foods can't I buy in China?
Ok, I'm sorry if I make anyone uncomfortable by mentioning anything in my list. I can just imagine your mouths watering at the mere mention of these items, but here goes.
I know there is peanut butter, but what is it like? Kraft has extra creamy that I like better than Skippy. Is there any good peanut butter in China? I maybe paranoid, but I need my peanut butter sandwiches. I just read my jar here and it says licensed and trademark by.... but no mention of made where, so it may come from China?
Miracle Whip, no not the sex toy, the salad dressing, sandwich stable?
Blue cheese, sour cream, cream cheese available?
Is bread easily bought ?

Hi Ted, most of these products are readily available in import stores in China's major cities. Beijing for example, has a number of well-known imported grocery stores which have a bakery section, a deli selling cold cuts and meat and even a cheese counter with everything from French brie, Danish blue cheese to Dutch gouda. They also stock several brands of peanut butter, jams, spreads etc.
Even bigger chain supermarkets like Carrefour (which mainly sell Chinese food contrary to expectation) sells decent baguettes for Chinese standards and has an import aisle where you may just find a good Western brand jar of peanut butter.

I can always go to Hong Kong and buy what's not sold here - but you can find half decent imported peanut butter if you look hard enough. In Shenzhen there's www.nogogo.com as well which is handy for expats looking for stuff that's not easy to source.
it's better you make your own peanut butter..buy fresh peanuts,olive oil or dairy butter.grind the peanut with blender then add olive oil or dairy butter with white sugar then you can add some of your favorite fruits like strawbery and evaporated milk then you can taste the unforgetable peanut butter you make by your own....Gotcha!!!!
