Q: What happened to all of the opportunities for learning Martial Arts in China?
So, here's the deal - I want to learn Taekwondo or MMA, however, there are two main issues that I continue to come across whenever I approach different schools/trainers about it:
- Classes are only available to small children and teens
- Classes are available but not everyday and/or in the evenings after work
To make matters more complicated, I recently secured a teaching job in Shenzhen which I am quite happy about, nonetheless, the school's location is quite far from the city centre (about an hour's drive from Luohu's Baoan Bei Lu, going in the direction of Dameisha). This has now led me to the conclusion that I should now consider looking into approaching a personal trainer or sparring partner in Taekwondo.
Generally speaking, where's the best place to look to find out more about this? Anyone done anything similar to this? And what may the costs, for example, hiring a personal trainer, be like?
i dont know the name of the town or the martial arts learned, but 5 years ago, there was a young guy in a training class with me that was attending a martial arts school in the mountains somewhere in shandong, he did his training during the week and taught in the same city for aston on weekends and absolutely loved the arrangement and the training. i recall him saying something about a shaolin temple, probably not spelled right, oh well,
i am a bit too old and well fed for such pursuits but if i were 25 to 35, i can see how it would be a good adventure.
maybe someone else knows the city and school information.
You might want to have a look on Shenzhenstuff or Shenzhenparty websites. You might come across personal trainers or MMA/Taekwondo gyms on those sites.

Chinese manager of one of the Urumqi China Merchants Bank is Taekwondo master. I'm not sure, where does she exercise.

If you have time get up extra early and go for walks around the parks/open areas around you... In my area (Beijing) there are many "old" people still practicing "kung fu" (or "gong fu" in Chinese)... I started joining in with them a long time ago and they seem quite happy to teach a westerner... and the best thing is....... its free...

There are a lot that do Tai Chi, but there are also A lot that do Kung Fu, I did Wing Chun in my home country for many years... I know the difference.. 
update the martial arts school is between jining and taian, you can teach in either city and attend the school.

But the OP is going to be working in Shenzhen, that's a long way from Henan province!

Yeah, that's the main issue. Although, I was previously based in Jining and may return there one day so thanks for the info!
