Q: what happens when you die?
i know i'm going to hell.
but how would my family go about getting the remains. would they have to fly here? would the govt here try to screw them over with expenses.

tell your family that if you crock in China you want to be brought back home
Im sure your consulet will help with the paper work to repatrait your remains
.
or you could be cremated in china and posted home in a fedex box.

I'm just guessing but I think you'll most probably be cremated with permission from the US embassy.
Then your ashes shipped to your loved ones.
I think it's too expensive to ship a body and it's something your embassy is not likely to cover.
Why worry a bout your dead body? you gone... dead meat... leave the problem in China why go into expenses?

He's not asking for himself, he's asking for his family, who will probably want to claim his remains. Death is expensive for the living.

have your final requests tatooed on your chest in Chinese, then they will be able to find them,, just hope that no one tries to cremate you while you are sleeping.
I've told my loved ones to sell my body (or parts) to the higest bidder (medical, black market, university, whatever) and use a little of the money to throw a party in my honor.
Depending on how much they are willing to wheel and deal in their grief striken state... I'll either get a six-pack good-bye or a huge event that many will be remembered and cheerished for years.

Dead meat.. to have sentiment for it?? Its just a big expense for whet? Serous what can your loved ones do with your dead body? Preserve it as you were so handsome? Be realistic, they cant bring you back to life, its better no one claim your body and its China`s problem to get rid of your remains.

I am a bit confused, are you asking what happens to the soul (if you believe you have one) or to the body (or physical remains).
A dear friend dies suddently of a heart attack in Guangzhou recently. As many, he had made no preparations. He left 4 daughters in USA, they had no money to come to China. He laid for almost 5 weeks in a freezer waiting for decisions. Chinese Officials wanted letter from US Consulate authorizing cremation. Consulate said it was a private decision, not up for them to do, and refused letter. 4 Daughters sent affidavits authorizing cremation, Chinese Officials still refused requesting also letter from Consulate. Days went by and nothing done. daughters had to sent $ 6,000 US dollars to Consulate to pay for cremation, urn and shipping ashes back to USA for burial there, plus a charge for "storing and preserving a dead body".
I strongly urge each one here to make a document in Chinese with very specific instructions on what to do or allowed to do in an emergency, or in case you die if cremated or not, where to bury you, etc. Do not expect Consulate to pay for anything, or issue any letter authorizing disposal of your body. At least in my friend's case, they did not do it.

thanks this is what i was wondering cause a young comedian i had the pleasure of meeting once passed, he was one of my favorite jersey comedians. i met him long ago when he was touring colleges. only 7 years older than me died of complications from a stroke.

Yow! Kind of stiff for the remaining family! What would have happened if the daughters had just said "Friggit!". Would the embassy have gone after them? Would they have just chucked the remains into a landfill or a paupers cemetery? I too would worry about the financial burden my family could potentially face if I suddenly kicked the bucket. If I did, I dont want them shelling out $6,000.00. I would then tell them to forget about it, let the locals decide what to do BUT I dont want them bitten in the tail by the Embassy for any costs either.

This was sometime back. Today I can tell you how it ended. The US Consulate never produced the letter authorizing cremation. But the granted the Green Card to widow so she could carry the ashes and urn back for burial in USA. And that Green Card was denied twice on basis of not sufficient income, even after the second time an sponsor was included. Chinese Officials released body for cremation once money to pay for all charges was shown, forgetting the need for the letter from the Consulate Again, the point here is that if you live alone, and abroad, then have a document stating exactly hat you want done with your reamins in case of death. Or to what extend you wish to be connected to life saving machines. Or whatever you deem important. Have one copy with your papers, and give another to a trudted friend.

I told my family to put my body in a kowtow position and leave me on a busy sidewalk with a sad note saying, "Can't afford death. Please help." and a tin can.
They are under strict orders to come by and clean out the tin can daily and dust me off once a week.
Just another reason why I say always have at least 50,000 rmb at all times. If you are on a company contract with a Z visa, it states clearly that they have the responsibility to ship you back to your home country if that happened.
Or, you could end up in ashes. LOL

They'll probably take your ashes and use them to make chopsticks, or better yet... they'll put your ashes in Traditional Chinese Medicine, along with a mix of powdered deer penis, and then sell it for 1000 RMB to a local official.
