Q: What have been some random/surprising words that your students know?
One kid of mine came up with the word "composition" when describing his pet. It was obviously rehearsed, but it sounded so out of place when he was like "my cat is black" most of the time, and couldn't even answer simple yes and no questions. One of my children also knew the word "volcano" which she blurted out during a tag game...oh there are others. What have been some of yours?

Some surprising words that my students have said were: "Ultraman, Doraemon, Leader, Dora, Tom & Jerry, Snoopy, Garfield, and a few other cartoon names."
'Masturbate' surprised me from one 12 year old boy. Particularly when he persisted in telling everyone how often he did so. And I did have a girl of 9 tell me, by way of translating another student's Chinese the other day, that, "Teacher, Dragon just said fuck." Sometimes a teacher can only bow their head a moment before saying, "So, moving on........."
