Q: What have been the worst flat/living conditions you've endured here?

Crappy apartment conditions are all I have on my mind right now as i'm still in this dump, probably the worst of the 14/15 apartments i've lived in in the last nine years. Chinese toilet, no flusher, kitchen sink doesn't work, have to tip endless buckets of filthy water all day, cockroaches flock here by the thousands, rats festoon the balcony which is so close to the opposite balcony i'm practically sitting face to face with the guy opposite when we're both out having a smoke, the kitchen window's only separated from next door's kitchen window by about two and a half feet, in fact there's literally nowhere in the entire flat I can stand naked without being in plain view of a neighbour unless all the curtains are drawn, plus I think this place has the worst neighbours i've ever had to put up with, six teenage girls who scream and holler in the middle of the night and don't even have the decency to be good looking. Whew. Feels better. But I guess i've got to look on the bright side, my wife didn't live in anything even resembling an apartment until she was ten. Spent a couple of years in a hut with no loo and a grass roof that let in water when it rained. And i've seen the place she spent the majority of those ten years and it's a storeroom. No window, about 8 foot by 6 foot, shared toilet on the floor above. Grim. Just her and her mum and sister. Dad was away working in the city. Grim. And she's come out an incredible, kind and giving person who has a reputation for fair play and integrity in business, gives regularly to charity and just a couple of months ago invited a homeless kid to come home and live with us. So yeh, I guess I should count my blessings. Still fun to moan a bit though. So....what are your stories?

So far into the countryside that there was nothing... this was in the dead of winter, with snow on the ground and frost everywhere.

Two hours in the black taxi under the sky,
Seven in a big bus on roads of stone,
Three in a small van, doomed to die,
Three on foot, on the way home
In the Land of Hunan where the Shadows lie.

No electricity. No heat, other than from coal polluting the inside of the house, which didn't last longer than 1 hour at night. No nothing, no civilization. No toilet. Just endless miles of clear skies as far as the eye can see. Winters are pretty harsh without heat, using only my coat as a blanket. Rust everywhere, uncleanliness and filth everywhere.

I loved it, actually. I miss it a lot. God's country, really.

Sounds like where my wife was born, but with a proper roof i'm guessing.

Hulk:

I really like the countryside in China. Nothing there to bother you, just curious onlookers. But I found most people don't actually care that I'm a foreigner. I was always treated like a human being. I like that.
