Q: What, if any, are your experiences of bringing sandwiches to work?

Sandwiches are a great invention and super convenient. I love to bring home-made ones to work for the fascination they engender in my colleague's faces. 'Bread for lunch! Are you seriously calling that food?' is something I encounter whenever I do so. Some even express wonder at the variety of things you can put between two slices of my wheat-based friend. I've found this to be a great way of bridging the culinary divide.

My students or friends won't touch my gourmet ham and cheese sandwich let alone taste it. They are curious tho, as they say they "have heard of them". Needless to say, I don't have to share often. Butter seems to be repulsive to them as well.

Most of the time they expressed surprise, even asked me if I was eating food (???)?  Some tried a small piece, and claim it was good.  I do like swiss cheese sandwich with pickles and mustard, or ham, cheese and pepperoni sandwiches.
In any event, it is a "foreign concept" to them, and does take a bit of getting used to.

I get the same reaction if I carried a box in to the office with me.  I'll have a group that is super nosey and what to know what it is and what's in it.  After that they're fine and go about normally.

A: Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever
A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
